So you are saying that Ukraine is better off long term with Russia than the EU?
No, Ukraine was better off being neutral and not being in either economic block. Once Ukraine joins the EU all of their trade with Russia will have to be regulated under EU law. This means a lot of things. For example no more gas discounts. Plus because of tariffs and sanctions the EU has on Russia a lot of commerce Ukraine has with Russia would be curtailed. Ukraine has no alternative market in the EU for most of their products.
Ukrainian heavy industry produces things which have limited value in the EU since the EU produces better products itself. This includes things like gas turbine engines for marine and helicopter applications. Good luck competing with the likes of Safran for this.
Their other major produce, food, well the EU already has to pay farmers not to produce food as it is. There is loads of extraneous food production in the EU and a lot of it is given away basically for free to 3rd world countries just to get rid of it.
Eastern Europe countries who have joined the EU have seen their wealth increased much more than non-EU countries. So why would Ukraine choose Russia over EU?
Just look at what happened to Ukrainian GDP ever since 2014 happened. Where is this supposed wealth increase. This even neglects looking at the deeper impacts. The rise in the consumer gas price had a major impact on ordinary people in Ukraine including the poorest. Millions of Ukrainians migrated to Poland and Russia and other places.
You ignore that joining the EU had several negative impacts on those countries as well. Poland used to manufacture their own tanks and now they purchase second hand tanks from Germany. They used to produce their own helicopters but because they now have to follow EU standards of fuel efficiency and the like they would have had to upgrade their helicopters. This meant they replaced helicopter engines with US made ones. This made their helicopters no longer cost effective. Much of Polish heavy industry collapsed overnight. There are factories in Poland, sure, Germany moved a lot of factories to Poland to take advantage of lower wages there. But good luck finding any Polish heavy industry owned by Poles today. A lot of people moved abroad and remittances allowed the general standard of life in Poland to go up incrementally. Eventually new industries like software popped up and this soaked up some of the workforce.
Russia has a subpar economy (international trade we look at GDP Nominal) in comparison to the EU.
A lot of it is influenced by commodity prices in the international market. This is cyclical.
There was plenty of growth in Russian GDP from 2000 to 2014.
I am all ears to listen on how you could credibly explain that Ukraine is better off with Russia than the EU. I would also like to listen to the people on the ground what they would prefer. Even with CIA rampant, there will still be more people in favour of the EU than Russia
A lot of people seem to think joining the EU is some kind of panacea or money tree. Sure, they will grant you cohesion funds in the first decade you join or whatever. You plough those into infrastructure. You build roads so German cars will sell well and build railroads to have French or Italian trains in them. Then you start paying back.
That's nothing in comparison to what EU is offering to its EE members
Ukraine's problems were self-inflicted and unless they solve their problems the EU won't even let them in.
