Probably down to incompetence more than anything else. But am not ruling anything out and the possibility of a potential CIA operational front but that requires a far more solid evidence before I personally believe that's to be the case.

He isn't exactly wrong about this... the world is now an ever shrinking zero sum pie, and China's gain is American's loss and vice versa etc

Prior to Covid, I read that China supplied about 40-42% of the ingredients to the world for the manufacturing of medicines. India supplied the same market with a similar percentage, maybe a fraction less. However there are/were some ingredients where china supplied as much as 70% of Indian requirements. I believe India is currently trying to ramp up its domestic production.

There's an old figure that China supplies 60% of the world’s supply of APIs (active pharmaceutical ingredients).
But as the article below says, no one really knows.
