I know why that happened, and there are good examples not far from today, Gorbachev and Yeltsin, former leaders of Communist Party who destroyed and banned Communist Party. Or a little earlier, Wang Jingwei, former leader of ROC who turned over to Japan and fought against ROC. Or Hitler who infamously commended his "loved" German people unworthy to live just before Berlin's fall because German people were not able to fulfil his desire of conquering the world.
Their common feature is that they all claim and act as if they love the country that they think they can control and influence greatly. Once they realize that they don't get things their way because their own failures or people in the country disagree with them, they went berserk, jump to the opposite side and try to destroy everything they "loved".
Such people are opportunists, love no one but themselves only. Their only interest is to use their "loved" people and country as a stepping stone to fulfil their personal desire of being the top dog of the world. A good example from him is this "China is great in building HSR and other super projects, but China is destroying Chinese culture. His oversea community is the true carrier of Chinese culture. China's opening up is the result of Li Guanyao's advice."
He is not alone as such "China lover" though, not only on the street but also this forum. It is easy to distinct them by asking the question "are they willing to concede or compromise when they appear to be the minority among Chinese even if they may be right". It is that "willingness to be together for better and for worse" defines who they really are.
