It's not unique that China's government can bargain with the big pharmas to get cheap drugs, lots of countries with universal health can do this.

So really if you think about it, what's really happening here is the people of US are subsidising the other countries by paying more for drugs over in the states due to their crappy health care system.

NZ has been doing it for long time with Pharmac and it has been so successful, it seems US is the only few countries not doing it

I think this is another move towards reunification. That is pretty much the only scenario that would make the RE card worth playing for China.

I think China will gradually reduce supply (but continue to take orders as normal, just be extra slow in delivering) ever so slightly over months while co-ordinating with Chinese tech companies to deplete open market supplies as much as possible without causing a crisis.

Then when China is ready to move on Taiwan, it heaps more pressure on the US because if they dare to fight China over Taiwan, their entire high tech supply chain, including for weapons, grinds to a complete halt almost overnight.

In fact, China has a lot more efficient strategic leverage, such as electronics, textiles, consumer goods ....
EG: Ukraine changes attitudes, withdraws from countries to condemn China, after facing the risk of blocking vaccines

Seems like the most telegraphed ‘surprise’ attack ever. Almost seems like the Russians are going out of their way to draw attention and US military resources to Europe early next year, one could only wonder at why. It’s not like they have an unofficial ally who might benefit from having a few US carriers in Europe.

The US might just be getting the two front war its planners always dreamed of.

The 1,035-kilometer-long China-Laos Railway, a signature project under the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative, officially went into full operation on Friday, catapulting the landlocked Southeast Asian nation into a Chinese standard-powered modern railway era that honors China's promise of enabling inclusive growth along the BRI routes.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith witnessed the opening of the railway via video link.

The opening of the China-Laos Railway will make Laos' dream of becoming a land-linked hub come true. China will ensure the maintenance and security of the railway and build high-quality, sustainable and people-friendly economic belts along the route, President Xi told Thongloun via video link.

Xi stressed that both China and Laos adhere to the leadership of the Communist Party and the socialist orientation, which is the essence of their bilateral relations. The two sides should jointly safeguard the political and institutional security of China and Laos.

Xi said serving the people is the common purpose of the two parties, and the relationship between China and Laos should also emphasize the people's supremacy to benefit the people of both countries more.

The first train of the China-Laos Railway left on Friday afternoon soon after the cross-border railway was officially put into operation. Among the cargo loaded on the train were potash products manufactured by a China-Laos joint venture named Sino-Agri International Potash Company, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

The thrill of getting on board new bullet trains in Laos, where locals' impression of railway had long been underwhelmed by a 3.5-kilometer run-down railway connecting Laos' capital Vientiane and Lao's border with Thailand, is seen as effectively silencing unfounded Western criticism over BRI-enabled benefits, according to regional affairs watchers and those participating in the dream-come-true project.

New chapter in Laos' history

The China-Laos Railway, the biggest public project in Laos' history, links Kunming of Southwest China's Yunnan Province with Laos' capital Vientiane, including a 106-kilometer section from Kunming to Yuxi in Yunnan with a designed speed of 200 kilometers per hour, which had already been put into operation in December 2016.

The newly built 507-kilometer section connecting Yuxi and Mohan, a border town in Yunnan, with a designed speed of 160 kilometers per hour, adds to another 422-kilometer new section from Mohan to Vientiane, also designed to travel at 160 kilometers per hour, China Railway said in a statement sent to the Global Times.

The Yuxi-Mohan section was built by China Railway Kunming Group, while the Mohan-Vientiane section, largely within Laos, was built by a China-Laos joint venture.

I'm kind of jealous with Putin, he's slick and shrewd and managed to achieve his goal while everybody is focusing on China.

The Neocon/Neolib US is focusing on both Russia and China!

Was Putin slick and shrewd when het let the US coup in Ukraine happen ? Was he slick and shrewd when he let the destruction of Libya happen ? Was he slick and shrewd when he continued to appease a criminal neocon/neolib regime for like 10+ years ? He might be slick and shrewd now but it has taken a while for him to properly respond to neocon/neolib aggression in Europe, the middle east and elsewhere. He is not the messiah some people make him out to be. On the other hand, at least he is no Yeltsin or Gorbachev, selling his country and the safety and security of Europe to the Anglo-American neocon/neolib foe. What will happen when Putin steps down? Who will carry the torch ? This worries me a bit. The neocon/neolib US does not respect weakness.

Putin wise or stupid. Not important. It is important that he has a friendly attitude towards China. That is enough. Currently two countries are in honeymoon, but anyone knows what will happen in the next 50 years. China needs to earn most benefits possible during this period and be prepared to deal with all situations for post-Putin era

This.

Post-Putin will likely be an Westophile and secure US/EU sanction relief in a quasi-alliance to contain China. A reverse Nixon if you will. So China should either secure a formal treaty (marriage) or just maximize the benefits of a Putin handjob before his successor flirts with suitors and you get AIDS/HIV.

Regardless, China will be the most powerful nation on earth by the time Putin dies, so it will be foolhardy for a successor to ally with West against China, since China will have far deeper economic relations with Russia than West...but don't underestimate Westophilia among Russian elites.
