I think at the end of the day it just a matter of taste. Like why some Hollywood films did well in china but bombed in US.To be fair, Japanese cars except Lexus never had the reputation for luxury in China than some big American brands such as Cadillac and Lincoln even though their reliability is less than Toyota. This is pretty much the same as BBA (in Europe) who are always behind Japanese cars in reliability and maintanance cost, but people still prefer them for the look and feel.
