Everyone in the US establishment has bought the notion that China needs to be contained .Fear has been sold and it's been such a success .
What they have not agreed on is how to go about it that is why you are seeing these seemingly contradictory statements from various quarters of the administration .Dont forget that the number one foreign policy objective of the US is to prevent emergence of a global or regional hegemon .
If we were to have a look at the two countries and what each has achieved in the last 40 years , I know which will come out the winner in the next 40

@SampanViking CONTAINMENT as a strategy is workable IF you had an IMPORT SUBSTITTUTE available, other than that it will be a huge failure as shown by Trump trade war policy which precipitate as one of the reason for the current US shortages and economic woes. An addendum, Trump trade war is the first of the American Containment policy but as always of Trump he failed miserably with his flip flopping decision making and greed. Biden want to continue but had an incoherent and ego driven team using the same formula, so it only magnify the problem. All I can say is that CONTAINMENT strategy is done, Some EU countries , SK , JPN and even ASEAN had enough, they had experiences it, tasted it and felt wanting, It was not what they signed in for and led to believe (Americans are good showman).
