I think you may have heard this line in the contemporary world, just a couple of years back:

The Rule of the Jungle: “Fall behind and you will be beaten” — Wang Yiwei, a professor of international relations at Renmin University of China in Beijing

is really a thought provoking!
The Rule of the Jungle: “Fall behind and you will be beaten” — Wang Yiwei

Isn't this phase "落后就要挨打"? Why it is attributed to this person? I think every Chinese knows this word from their birth. P.S. it was Joseph Stalin the first person who said this in 1931. It was later used by Mao as most Chinese know. To me, this phrase has become so deeply ingrained into Chinese mind, so much so it makes no surprise who, when and where it is being said.

Anyway, I think we are being carried away from the original topic of the significance of the wording in the 1850 treaty.
