This is precisely the flexibility in Chinese policy making that I addressed. Always people lament, China needs a compelling story to sell the world rather than just being a boring mercantalist state. Well, having a good story to sell the world means you'll be bound to that story like leg chains and the only thing that's ever constant in this world is change. In just one month Trump has ended the age of ideaological struggle ie. Capitalism vs Communism, Authoritarianism vs. Democracy, Liberalism vs. Illiberalism, and brought back the Age of Empires. What better polity to navigate this environment than China, which has always had a finger in everyone's pie regardless of ideaology? In the age of Trump, states will value stability and predictability above all else, and China is always predictable in that as long as you show them the money, they will honor all agreements.
Its why in case y'all didn't see the news, China recently surpassed the UK for the first time ever to become the world's number 2 nation in terms of Soft Power. Imagine that, in just five years going from COVID to being the last hope for the civilized world. And most of the developments that earned China this ranking happened in just the span of two months.
I'm sure China has plenty of its own stories, it is just not the right time and place to focus on telling those.
China is going around gathering allies, weakening US' loyalists and creating support. Sadly as of today, America has more legitimacy than China. By that I mean, countries are more open to America taking them over than they are for China to do the same.
The current situation is like in a kingdom where the king (US) is weaker in a raw military/wealth competition than the prime minister (China). But if the minister would openly declare grand plans for his own dynasty out of nowhere, there could be a confrontation that can destroy the whole country.
Instead, he goes behind the scenes, using his wealth to fund US' enemies and using big tent politics to get any nobles (countries), whether big or small, to join a loose coalition.
Once China has enough clout, Beijing can just demand US to abdicate all leading positions.
Only afterwards will China show how they intend to the run the realm. However, we can already see a preview of things will be based on how China runs its own country currently.
Compared to US' despotcy where a small band of chosen lords sit on a city in the hill and raid all the other subjects to empower their own private households and with no plans to improve any country outside of the "garden", China would take all the taxed resources from subjects and give them back in form of infrastructure, education and other interconnectivity projects. But this wouldn't be a charity job, subjects would use those infrastructure to pay back by supporting China's development. Unlike US, China has clearly stated that the imperial core will never stop being developed.
