They are decent linear workers under good supervision and can play office politics well. All of that does not really translate to research, I can only recall only one major Indian name in AI research straight-away - Anish Vaswani who was the first author of Transformer paper, so there are very good Indian researchers, but their number is very limited. Contrast that to the number of Chinese R&D researchers - you can find Chinese names in almost every major paper.
The new Google Titans paper, which is making the rounds of the usual hype train as the potential next deep learning architectural breakthrough, was by two Iranians (Sharif University of Technology) and one Chinese (Tsinghua). It’s unfortunate these top minds from US enemy countries are still working for the US but also illustrates that there are top talent in every country.

Hopefully there will be very encouraging development news regarding China's EUV this year - So that China can deliver a double-whooping in one go.
China's tech war operational security means it's almost certain you won't find out about Chinese EUV becoming operational until after its already scaled to the point of mass producing consumer chips.

What the hell, DeepSeek R1 in Chinese is super funny and human like, here's someone asking it how does it feel about making headlines in recent days:

That's some wild Chinese training data, like as if they trained it based on weibo memelord or something. I dig how it keeps referring to the person interacting with it as "you mankind".

"You can't blame me if Nvidia's share price drops, what's next Jensen Huang's leather jacket loses a button and you'll blame that on me too?"
"next time the server goes down cus you're all ddosing me can you not screenshot it and post all over weibo, even AI like me don't want to lose face".

Do you think these people will realize that half of OpenAI and “American” ai development in general is Chinese dudes lol
yeah and they're already panicking

A few capable local PhDs, along with a group of master's students or even interns, could achieve this level. It only took this much money and a bunch of mid-range or lower-tier graphics cards.

Everyone talks about distillation, but the reinforcement learning (RL) here is really well done, and the structure is truly unique. These things are extremely challenging and require a lot of courage.

As someone who's past 30 and has gotten used to being lazy in America's laid-back environment, I don't know how to handle myself now.

If this trend continues, it seems like the U.S. might not be able to compete with China in free competition. If the doors close, as a Chinese person, I might even get kicked out.

Go back to China? But I might still not measure up to just one of their interns—Chinese interns often have to pay to get such opportunities.

This sense of being pushed into a corner is stronger than when Trump won five million popular votes. There's nowhere to escape.

I don't even have the courage to push myself to try harder.
...
Even if I could work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, I still wouldn't adapt to life in China...
I dislike mobile payments; I don't like eating takeout; I hate having to use a VPN just to browse the internet; and I despise everything needing real-name registration and备案.

Being told not to stand during a rock concert has completely erased any thoughts of returning to China.
Returning to life in China as it is now is the last thing I would ever want to do in this world.

But with America looking like this, there's a high probability that China will overshadow us, and it's likely they'll vent their frustration by expelling people like me. I just don't know what to do.

What is wrong with the second post? That has to be some of the whiniest and fakest complaints I’ve ever seen. Life in China sucks because the ccp has forbid me from carrying cash (a time honored tradition), forced me to order takeout(??????), and prevented me from being a public nuisance at a concert. Did I miss the new five year plan banning all bougie sit down restaurants or something?
