Douyin did not allow non-Chinese phone for registration until about 2 weeks ago. I have it in my phone but never registered. Even though it allows registration with foreign phone numbers now, it requires extra proof besides the phone number itself.
Chinese control is never an issue, before or after, TT or XHS. The core of the issue is always media censorship for DNC or GOP. US public would have never reacted to Gaza the way it has been if there was no TT around. By the same token, Trump 2.0 and GOP have tasted TT benefits in this general election and I guess they don't want to let go this golden reservoir of Gen Z voters that are traditionally in DNC pockets.
In politics there is no accident and there is no charity, while there is always more than meets the eyes. So I am very positive that TT will resume its US service soon and Trump 2.0 will make more amicable deals with Xi in this year. Trump 2.0 already said out loud a few times under various occasions that China is needed to resolve global issues. So what are the global issues Trump 2.0 care about:
(1) US treasury sales and dollar stability
(2) US energy sales and agriculture sales
(3) Gaza drama is not over; it is in break rather
(4) Ukraine drama has to have some photo ops because Trump 2.0 "values" that "deal"
(5) Trump 2.0 needs China "complicity" while it is "telling" other countries to "behave"
I am willing to bet $20 that my guess is in the ball park ...

Yeah I find it ironic that for the past five years most of them played along with the deep state vilification of Chinese people (and East Asians in general since they can’t distinguish eye slant angles), leading to Asian Americans being targeted in vicious hate crimes both IRL and online. But now that their favorite toy gets taken away it is hip to learn Mandarin and shit on the political establishment and be pro-PRC? That is just entitled.
It is by the grace of the Chinese people that they demanded a cat tax instead of a pussy tax to join RedNote.
I think its too late for that kind of rapprochement, although I might be wrong:
- Most people expect Trump to flip the table at some point when convenient, and try to pull a "I have altered the deal" type play to get better leverage over whatever is the flavor of the day; it would be foolish to think this is not going to happen at some stage(s) in the next 4 years.
- China is no longer willing to prop up the US, and has indicated so through supplying US dollars to global south economies in exchange for resources.
- The US is the weakest and most divided it has been since Vietnam; its future value to China is as a market, which is better served by a fragmented US rather than a strong cohesive one.
There's simply no benefit to 'helping' the US since the narrative under Trump will be good today, and "China virus" the next when convenient, however there is all the benefit in twisting the knife to further weaken it.
