What changed their mind? Did Trudeau senior give a scolding?
My opinion is that this whole tariff then exemption was planned in advance. Recall the meetings between US-Canada-China before the tariffs dropped.

Remission will not be granted for goods intended for resale in the same condition to the United States.
If you read the actual tariff remission notice, I think the no EV resale into US is the key point, since Canada was already hinting that it was mostly the US forcing Canada to apply the tariffs. Canada starting a trade war with China also doesn't make sense in the first place, I'm hopeful there might be BYDs in Canada in the future.

you cannot blame some manipulation for protests. Countries like Ukriane and Georgia got visa free travel to Europe so people know what they are looking for and even this Turkey/Iran if get similar arrangement will become similar.
if some people not understand. than look at this Arabic names on Russian officials.

More likely their mission is to destroy the TSMC fabs before the PLA gets there.
China will destroy them first if they can't control them. TSMC is important to national security, as its the only source of semis in China that can be infiltrated by America. If you physically destroy the fabs, the people still remain and be safely extracted to defensible territory later, while US will lose any chance of securing vital electronic supplies that way.

This is pragmatic-albeit temporarily annoying -diplomacy and statecraft-give and take negotiations for gains on the ground, reduction of tensions etc.Something "vishwaguru"Modi and company just doesn't understand or do.Remember when Deng and China had to compensate France and Britain and other European countries many millions of dollars for their loss of property/business etc in China The Shanghai Bund,Shandong, colonial businesses etc.It grated on me to no end BUT in the end to normalize diplomatic/business relationships to access markets,to open windows on knowledge/developments worldwide -it was well worth it-now look at China and its dominant power dynamics in EVERY sphere. The same can be said of the Sino-Japanese business/diplomatic initiative by Beijing -many times in magnitude of historic connotations, blood debt, BUT a sane ,controlled, pragmatic sense of working toward a better, fuller stronger future for China-look at the China-Japan dynamic NOW-no doubt China is ascendant and ascending.Glad to have lived to see this day-and soon, soon, full Taiwan reunification and further diminution of our enemies.

Exactly. We should be comfortable giving India the big wins they want (aka news headlines), given that their government needs them to secure votes, as long as China gets the results China needs.

What's stopping American SOF from extracting or denying the human resources of TSMC? I would try to kidnap these experts or eliminate them if that was unsuccessful. The chip-making hardware is as good as kaput the moment things go hot so the minds behind the tech will be next best thing.

So sick of hearing this nonsense.
TSMC equipment is not some magic bullet. Most of TSMC’s expertise is human, not equipment. Samsung and Intel have access to the exact same equipment and neither have captured the same market share as TSMC.
Even if an EUV equipment is captured, who would service it?
This is just typical US media talking points for the stupid masses

Blowing up or backdoor TSMC to prevent Chinese control is one of those brainrot Reddit ideas that reminds you just how dumb China's enemies are.
China is the only country on earth that doesn't need TSMC, while US reliance on TSMC is now total given the state of Intel and Samsung, and the rounding error capacity that is TSMC's US fabs.
It would be absolutely hilarious, one for the history books, if China manage to scares Americans into blow up TSMC and kills off all competition to Chinese tech dominance without even getting the blame.
Infact, China should play up the idea by strongly threatening Americans against it, so next time China does a Taiwan blockade exercise, they can blow up TSMC with special ops or a stealth drone and everyone will think US did it.
Infact American politicians might even cheer before reality hits.

If you were a semiconductor expert in Taiwan, why would you wait for the last minute to leave?

US seems intent on conducting economic warfare to capture TSMC anyway

Whole thing sounds like nonsense. 5G is not an American technology.

Nobody could understand how that was possible given that Chinese companies did not have the technology required to make the chips.

Just factually wrong…
