India wants to build those SSNs, ostensibly to patrol the Indian Ocean, and for Supapowar pride. I can understand that. But, knowing the Jai Hinds, they are going to have wet dreams about sailing these things off the Chinese coast together with the navies of their Anglo masters. To show to the Chinese, the superiority of their Brahmin genetics.

When China and Russia build nuclear submarines, SCMP and their kind would call them noisy rust buckets that poses minimal threat to the great navies of the West. But when India announces that its gonna build them, then its about "building capability", and they even have the cheek of comparing India to the big five. Yeah, Jai Hind to you SCMP.


India have been talking about this since 2020. So are they finally gonna buy it this time? 31 MQ-9Bs, versus dozens of TB2s and WLIIs by Pakistan, and hundreds, if not thousands of drones by China. Jai Hind!

BTW, how long is India gonna build those two brand new SSNs?

India to build and commission two brand new SSNs in 10-12 years time? This is India, so take that deadline with a bucket full of salt. They won't even know what kind of PLAN would be waiting for them in 10-12 years time.

How many indigenous submarines does India operate right now? Are they completely 100% indigenous?

Can they build their own nuclear reactors yet?

If the answer to both is "no" then this is another example of trying to walk before they crawl. They probably think if china can do it, they can too.

But Being bombastic in their intentions but then failing to achieve their goals 10-12 yrs down the road, wouldn't that be a bigger hit to their ego? I would imagine so.

Well in 10-12 years time, none would be around in decision making anyway, so easy to blame the govt at that time, many Ifs

The Arihant-class reactors were apparently built by Babha Atomic Research Center (BARC). So it's a yes. But is it good? That's another topic for discussion.

The way their ego work is not the same as normal people. If they fail 10-12 year's down the road, they'll just set a new deadline and forget about the old one. Then they'll tell everyone amazing stories about how their delayed SSNs are gonna sweep the PLAN aside. If you press them on why they didn't hit their last deadline, they'll blame "evil China", and every other thing in this universe but themselves.

Arihant-class submarine is very small and smaller than even Type 092 which was built in 1981 and Indian most advanced SLBM has range even less than Chinese first SLBM JL-1, even much shorter than improved JL-1A. We are not talking about JL-2 and JL-3 here

I highly doubt India has the know how to miniaturise nuke small enough for SLBM ... even India hasn't convinced many that it can build H bomb, all test all basic nuclear test, even the last one was claimed as H bomb, but far from convincing by many

OTH, China will build and operate (likely) 10x 095 and another 6x 093B in 10 years (being conservative 2 SSNs per year)

If magically India could build 2x SSNs, most would be like 093A in term of performance and size, I am being generous here

There are 20 bays at Huludao's new yard alone with 4 more being added, China builds a lot more than 2x SSNs a year, starting estimate is 6.
