It wouldn't happen, it's way less controversial and won't invite severe reprisal on US/Pro-US civilians (which they don't actually care about, but it looks really bad for them in the press) if America just cancels your visa and tells you to go to some neutral country. *shrugs
I think if 1 country has a larger economy, industry base and leads in more technological sectors, that does indeed make the smaller country only near peer to the larger one. Arguments against this is that US has a larger (although not necessarily qualitatively equal or able to replenish at same rates) standing military.
I still find it funny how they are trying to blame the one child policy for China fertility problems when like most of the developed world (and hell even countries like India) have this problem. Its almost a global wide problem.

China is not a “peer-level competitor” to the US in any aspect and will not be for at least another 1-2 decades (even assuming China sustains the same growth trajectory as the Tigers did). After all, Taiwan and Hong Kong, which are notionally parts of China are U.S.-China irritants.
