Someone tells this guy that foreign tourists are not that important for China. Most of the tourists are from Hong Kong, Macau, and overseas Chinese. And mainland tourists probably outspend foreign tourists many times over.

It is just a pointless conference. But Biden desperately needs to show himself as a world leader.

The guy is more scared that after going to China, people would realize their own government/media has been lying and China looks more developed/cultured than their own country.

Sounds like one of the sanctioned politicians (i'm thinking tugendhat) started screaming at his preferred stenographer in the press to write that article.
If he and his family are going to have the inverse Midas Touch, may as well turn the whole world into impoverished shit.

Another potentially historic day?

Biden is going full throttle on steep competition with China. Lets see how he is going to finance this initiative (printers brbr..).

And guess where will the production capacity come from. Probably a lot of dollars will flow to Chinese exporters (soon to be worthless if he prints these dollars to do this initiative)

Lets see how China will react when they demand from it physical goods and paying it with newly printed money..

Nothing conceptually wrong with the plan. But devil is in the details.
Is this just another lip service from the US to be forgotten after 1 week?
Does the US have the capability to execute the infrastructure project?
Does the US seek hegemonic control of project funded by other countries?
Does the US seek to exclude selected countries in this initiative to serve themselves, much like many other US initiative.

There are similarities to TPP under Obama.
TPP was initiated to give US control over trade rules and policies. It serves to exclude countries that cannot be dominated.
It was meant to sabotage a rival RCEP which is ASEAN centric free trade agreement.

Also same story with World Bank and IMF.
The World Bank has exclusively been under US control since inception.
IMF is exclusively under European control.
When AIIB was being created, the US and to some extent western countries was doing everything to sabotage AIIB.

Good luck convincing Americans that the US should spend 100s of billions overseas while there are tons of issues still unresolved.

To truly rival the BRI the only way for this initiative to have a chance of success, is for the us to massively decrease its defence spending and transfer them into the project
With $3T already printed for domestic spending, there is absolutely no more room
Therefore it never gonna happen
This is just the us asking its vassals to fund the project
The americans in the past has asked the same thing to japan to fund infrastrucure projects in south east asia with mixed results

@bajingan yup correct bro and the ASEAN know how to play the game. Japan infrastructure project is not cheap, they are being price out by the Chinese, Indonesia HSR is one bitter example hehehe. And it had a positive effect, Duterte first oversea trip is in China and got away with a aid assistance worth $9billion, when he visited Japan, the Japanese match it. When he visited China again for the second time he got $12 billion worth of investment and again Japan invited him and match the offer. Japan was forced to change the term every time they compete with the Chinese with a low interest rate and a long repayment period the return can't justify the investment. And Japan as rich as they are can't able to afford it.

How about rebuilding infrastructure at home first?
When it comes to infrastructure in North America, we only ever hear reasons why we can’t do something.

We can’t build high speed rail because it’s too expensive.

We can’t build affordable housing because we can’t find the space for it.

We can’t upgrade broadband infrastructure because it would impact competition in the market.

Yet somehow when billionaires want to build a massive football stadium or the most egregious example of oligarchy, the Bruce Ratner purchase of the Brooklyn Nets to facilitate an eminent domain land grab, somehow we can?

Half of the 5 eyes are probably pervert sexpats who still cling to notions of white supremacy. Its very telling when you find that visible minorities have much more favourable views of china in all opinion polls in the west compared to the nazis. Besides, I can tell you which countries chinese people will NOT be visiting after the pandemic. And the net flow of tourism $ means that the hurt to the 5 eyes are orders of magnitudes much more than any damage to china. Lets be honest, china isn't a tourism powerhouse.
