Low-cost, muti-role aircraft for small militaries

But it was the Soviet mainline fighter of it's day. Where the F5 was built as a very light fighter intended to be exported to less financially endowed nations.
True. But for defence it was good enough and the Su-9 and -11 were not very successful. In fact it was the F-104 done right. The tailed delta was a superior concept over the Starfighter's straight wing. Structurally the Starfighter was pretty bizarre ( pace Brat ) with multiple wing spars connected to very heavy fuselage rings using thick bolts. I have seen them being built. The fact that a direct descendent of the MiG-21 is still being built suggest that its structure is much easier to produce.

And there goes your Easter Card....

F104 is a little weird she was designed to give faster speed and higher altitude but sacrificing other performance numbers. the main issue was the Engine tech of the time. That Said F104 was not actually launched by a Order of the USAF it was a Lockheed project launched on there own dime based on requests of pilots who fought Russian Migs in Korea.

And it was an air defence fighter until it was sold to Germany fitted out like a Christmas Tree as a fighter-bomber. It was also sold to the Netherlands, that's how I came to see them being built at Fokker, for which the husband of the then Dutch Queen was bribed. That gave a small scandal in the late '70's, when the government denied, and another twenty years later when the government acknowledged the crime.

That the tailed delta was the superior concept was still said at a course on aircraft design at the Dutch Military Academy in the early '70's. There too the swept wing with a wing leading edge sweep of 57 degrees was presented as superior to those with lesser sweep because it induced a vortex above the leading edge that is stable to a high angle of attack. Such a wing was first used some twenty years earlier on the MiG-19.

Well it is official. The Ministry of Defense officially said today that the Argentine Air Force would not be purchasing supersonic multi-roll aircraft and will in fact use the monies to upgrade the A-4AR and purchase turboprop COIN aircraft, transport aircraft and helicopters.

There will be a need for single engine point defense aircraft.

The famous design bureau is betting on its extensive experience, brand awareness, and the fact that, according to Sergey Korotkov, “the global market for this jet fighter is quite large”. MiG has decided to follow the same path that its main Russian competitor Sukhoi followed in the 1990s. This path involves reorientation to global markets and attracting foreign financing for building new aircraft. The difference is that Sukhoi took to this path during booming development, inherited from the Soviet era, while MiG perforce took this path at a stage when it has no defence contracts.

Sukhoi and MiG are both daughters of UAC, so perhaps mother can help fund development of the small fighter. It would also help provide support as aircraft of both designers will to some extend use the same parts. And Russia would be happy to eat, a small, part of the fighter market that might otherwise be served by US. This picture shows a competitor to F-35 that is bound to be much cheaper as it will not be compromised by the aircraft design notions of US Congress.

Russia is on a rocky road right now, sanctions oil price and internal issues

a number of nations are pointing that way to.

Congress did not right the requirements for the F35, the three US services and allies did. The Air force wanted a stealthy replacement for the F16 and A10. The Marines wanted a jet that could replace their fleet of F18, EA6,AV8B that could do all those missions and be stealthy, The Navy wanted a fighter that could operate off their carriers and replace F18, F14, A6 with a stealthy platform that could attack first day of war. US Allies either wanted F16 or AV8 replacements. The only demand made by congress was that rather than 3 programs and competitions they grouped them into 1.

Exactly. And Congress accepted the theory that you could save many by designing a "single" aircraft that could serve all.
