From 1948-1976 USSR and the USA won the medal race four times each

1980 1984 not included because of boycotts.

1988 not counted,The results cant be taken seriously because of widespread drug enhanced performances especially by East Germany which artificially boosted their performance at the expense of the USA. The leass said about that era the better IMO.

There was also a suspicion that the Soviet Union was cheating in a large scale the 50's anyway.

From 1992 to 2004 mostly dominated by the usa.

Anyway what does being at the top of the table prove?

LOL so you arbitrarily excluded 1988 just because it doesn't suit you, how convenient.

Let's be honest here

USSR won most medal from 1972 all the way to end of USSR, that is 1972, 1976, 1988, and yes I am not counting 1984 and 1980.

Before that, US and Soviet union was in a tight race. And even right after ww2, Soviet union was still rebuilding, and US was not, but they were catching up fast, once they caught up in the 1970s there was no one can stop them, if both nation had went to 1984 and 1980 there is no doubt in my mind Soviet Union will the medals.

Even after USSR no longer exist, they left such a good sport infrastructure, even in 1992 Russia and all the former USSR nation combined had more medal than USA. It is only after they run out of money they starting to have problems.

Now China's Olympic model closely follow the USSR, and they got money to burn, I have no doubt eventually they will dominate Olympic medal count, only matter time.

The case against East Germany for cheating has been proven beyound doubt and which country unfairly benefited from Germanys cheating? the USSR of course. fact. Therefore I think its pretty fair to dismiss that one.

If I took the same approch as you I could argue that it was prosperous times for America during the 80's and 90's. They could have decided to use the money to burn theRussians them out of the medal race.

First of all, learn how to use quotes. 2nd of all, I was not talking to you in the first place, I was responding to solarz as he was saying about the medal count, but you decided to butt-in with soviet made cars and nuclear warhead which makes absolutely no sense, therefore I responded to you, which I now think is a huge mistake.

The original discussion was never for whatever medal was worth it for not, it was simply an acknowledged that China will eventually dominate the medal stance just like Soviet Union did. You on the other hand however decide to dispute that, and when I presented you with the evidence, how convenient that you ask me what does it prove?

and I was just providing proof to you that the Soviet Union did not dominate the medal race. The only evidence you provided was dependent on might of ... could of and wishful thinking with distorted logic on your part to conclude that it did. Therefore the result is 4 each, with the rest of the Olympic competition to muddied to include.

I was merely being sarcastic to your remark about the USSR ability to dominate everything, and curious as to why some would place so much importance into winning medals. A fair enough question for anyone to ask in response to your public boast.

I agree the Americans aren't Angels when it comes to drug use in sports.

However the debate was how many times the USA and USSR dominated the medal table. USA and USSR clashed 9x between 1948 to 1976 Ok the Soviets headed the medal table 5x to the U.S 4.Thats not dominating by any means of the word. 1980 and 1984 were no shows by either party so they don't count. Then for Jack L to start including the post USSR era into the debate.........geez. USSR collapsed in 1991. Any discussion past that point is irrelevant.

guys i think we all need to relax and just ENJOY the olympic games. there is no reason to turn this into a huge USA VS CHINA thing. it was very ungracious for john leonard to make cheap shots at a chinese swimmer for an awesome performance in the pool but one man does not speak for the entire US olympic delegation. i would think most members of the US delegation would be embarressed by such remarks from a buffoon! just because some american (western media) picked up that allegation and put a whole new spin on it, it doesnt mean every western media is anti china even though some are. the western media is very diverse and all kinds of opionon can be found. china is a huge power that is on the rise and thats why it always have extra scrutiny on whatever it does. we need to relax a little because just when does western bias and attacks ever stop chinese from achieving their goals? in fact the opposite effect happens because it just motivates them to work harder & unify for success.

does it really matter who is tops at the medal table? china & the USA, either one will be #1 or #2 and these are 2 great sporting nations and lets just enjoy the spectacular performances of their athletes and cheer for them. its hard to avoid dirty politics but the olympic games should also be for friendship and sportsmanship.
