IMO British sporting success was never in doubt. It was just a matter of when the events that she was strong in were scheduled. Had it been in the first two days when not too much was happening, media headlines would have read" The British sporting Lion regains its roar."
Oh I don't know, since we are talking about Olympics.... maybe I mean the Olympics??? Go to wikipedia and check out Soviet Union's past record.

I believe the history of the Olympics shows there's a bump in medal wins for the host country. It's said that's partly because judging is influenced by it.

My point is , Although there was a contest between the USA and the Soviets The Soviets NEVER Dominated everything at the Olympics which is what you are insinuating.
LOOK AT THE MEDAL COUNT. They were DOMINATING.

US won the medal count.. 1968 1964 1952 1948. You cant count 1980 because of the boycott The Soviet medal success was helped by the use of drugs therefore you will have to take their success with a grain of salt.
And please count how many Olympic that you actually bother to left out? Also notice the achievement of East Germany as well. Then we'll talk.

From 1948-1976 USSR and the USA won the medal race four times each
1980 1984 not included because of boycotts.
1988 not counted,The results cant be taken seriously because of widespread drug enhanced performances especially by East Germany which artificially boosted their performance at the expense of the USA.
From 1992 to 2004 mostly dominated by the usa.
