... and here I wonder about the specifics :) "Aegis Lite" ??
Probably not. Too expensive and too heavy.

IMHO, the best will be a decent, medium range, non APAR search radar with Cooperative Engagement capability so AEGIS ships could sue them in a network centric fashion for any task force defense.

I side against any above deck missile system going on any new US navy ships particularly the LCS whose mission statement is to operate in the Brown waters near Shore where Antiship missiles can easily lock. LCS needs its reduced cross section. so Flush mounted VLS are the Rule. so I side with Jeff although ...

And I side with FORBIN: cost increases could get the LCS program cancelled

Well Jura, the LCS program is already being scaled back significantly. From 55 vessels to 32 vessels for sure and maybe to 28 or even 26.

This is because with the modules the program is looking like the vessels at any one time, will not be well enough defended. So now we have to ensure that the vessels that are procured are well defended and can accomplish their mission. The individual module packages are each very expensive. Outfitting the vessels for modest multi-mission capability may well be cheaper than buying enough mission packages to cover all needs.

So, we are discussing the best ways to do that. One of those is to go ahead and add the Mk-41 cells that the vessels were designed "for," but not "with." It was designed that way precisely so that the VLS could be added later if needed for a much cheaper cost.

In addition, the US Navy now plans to design and build a follow on multi-role frigate class that will probably comprise 24-30 vessels.

the prospects are, quote,
They’d need to cut into the decks to install a MK41 vertical launch system, then code and test major changes to the combat system so it could handle advanced weapons like the RIM-162 Evolved SeaSparrow. In practice, that means they’d either (a) stick to a narrow range of weapon improvements that are largely self-contained, and require minimal integration, at the possible cost of fleet commonality – vid. MBDA’s Sea Ceptor missile; (b) pick just one LCS class to have real combat capability, and make changes to it; or (c) spend more to implement radar and combat system commonality across both classes, as part of a full weapons upgrade.

They are mistaken. On the Independence class the compartment is already there and marked, just behind the main gun. On the Freedom class the compartment is also ready, but covered by deck plating. They need to remove the coverings, install the modules, and then do the appropriate wiring and the add the appropriate fire control. These would not be without cost, but would be far cheaper than starting from scratch.

The 24 number would be cutting it off as soon as the vessels already under contract are built. That may still happen.

However, the Secretary of the Navy has instructed the US Navy to stop acquisitions/building after 32 vessels and that is the current decision.

Now a though occurred to me: With the Mk. 41 VLS installed, a couple of BGM-109 Tomahawks could be taken on some missions and launched from "unexpected locations" (I mean the LCSs are expected to visit small ports, small islands, aren't they?); look:
