Also the JH-7/A is heavier then its western and russian counterparts....so upgrades to the JH-7/A would be using more composite materials and increasing the thrust in the engines.

Its not really heavier than its Western or Russian counterparts, which includes the Jaguar, F-4 Phantom, the Tornado, the Su-24 and the F-111. Its just its design generation---including its Western and Russian counterparts---just don't have the TWR of todays generation. All the planes I mentioned above are considered underpowered today, and some of whom, even back then.

It's official, JH-7A is going to be part of the peace mission 2007. This is from a pretty reputable source. The China aerospace daily (aka HKB). This is an article from the 18th of April, basically today in China.

Great, so we can see both J-10 and JH-7A during the coming Peace Mission 2007. Wonder if the FC-1/JF-17 going to miss this party...:nana:

The FC-1 still needs to be OPVAL'ed yet. I don't think you will see it in an exercise for a while. The PLAAF can set up a regiment of FC-1s, and then invite the Pakistanis to fly them during exercises against other PLAAF units.

Re: JH-7/JH-7A Thread

Thats what I said in my last post, if you read it properly you can see that I said that. But anyway just a curious question how much structural or other modifications would be required to increase the JH-7/A range? As the range of the JH-7/A is not particular that great. I know that China is not yet seeking to strike other nations and stuff like that and is merley "currently" defending its nation. So currently their is no need to extend the JH-7/A range beyond Tawain. But in the near future China will exert its power beyond Tawain as everybody knows or suspects. So curious as the JH-7/A aircraft is newish what would the change be in increasing its range????

We could look at other aircraft (MiG-29, F-16, etc) and what they did to improve range:
* Additional drop tanks
* Additional internal fuel tanks, such as the latter MiG-29's dorsal-mounted internal fuel tanks
* Conformal fuel tanks
* In-flight refueling probe
* Improved engine technology (better fuel efficiency)

The JH-7 platform will most likely go through many improvements during its service life. I wouldn't be surprised if you see more fuel storage capacity in future variants.

The Tornado has an overall shorter length and height than the JH-7 also the engines on the Tornado are less powerful than the JH-7 but can achieve higher Max speed of Mach 2.2 compare to JH-7 Mach 1.7....but this isnt the factor of concern...range is about the same...fuel load about the same....but payload is different Tornado can carry 9tonne payload while the JH-7 with higher thrust engines carry less than JH-7 with 6.5tonne payload....Solution in own personal opinion is to reduce the length of the JH-7 increase the wing area....use more composite in construction.....achieve TVC engines to at least increase the issue of manuverability on JH-7.....this would hopefully increase payload to at least 7tonne....500kg makes a big difference....only a personal view.....Though design of the JH-7 still revolves around the J-8 too much....in a personal perspective not really a revolution design despite it being a young aircraft to be introduced to the airforce.

Re: JH-7/JH-7A Thread

JH-7A is quoted for 7 ton payload.

Some planes quote rather useless figures. Some quote payload ranges that are useless because they would entail such speed and range sacrifices to use them. Others quote useless maximum speed figures because they can only be achieved if the plane is in a clean configuration and carrying only half of the internal fuel.

Tornado definitely has the advantage of variable wing for sure. I believe its also lighter.

Just to let you know, the underpowered F-111 is quoted for 14 tons of payload. The Su-30 is quoted for 9 tons.

you have to check the combat radius at different loads, speed and profile. Obviously, if you fly at mach0.85, you are going to be far more fuel efficient than mach 1.69. So, in the end, I don't believe Tornado has better range than JH-7 if both are carrying 4 Harpoon/YJ-83 sized AShM. Also, even though flankers are stated to have longer range/payload than JH-7, in actuality, they don't. A lot of the export specs are given at optimal conditions.
