JH-7/JH-7A/JH-7B Thread

maybe someone can explain to me how the YJ-20 400KM missile works with JH7B. 400KM missile range means JH7B won't be able to guide the missile, the radar range won't able to reach that.

Is that a fire-n-forget type of missile? How does the initial acquisition of target come about at 400KM distance?

And what's preventing it to become a 500KM, 600KM, missile? All it needs is bigger fuel tank.

Assuming this YJ-12 is real, along with its rumored specs: Mach 4 + 400 KM. The targets can be acquired via UAVs and/or AWACs, which would transmit the target co-ordinates to the JH-7B's mission computer. The JH-7B, acting as a missile carrier, would fire the missile towards that direction and/or continued to be guided by the AWAC/UAV and/or its own on-board sensors.

I guess 400KM fits their objective for this mission. As you said, the range of the missile is dictated by the amount of fuel, which will then affect the cost and weight of the missile, which will affect the range of the aircraft, which will affect the survivability of the aircraft. Good design is making good compromises.

All of this is assuming that a YJ-12 with the rumored specs exists.

To admit, I think the YJ-12 is too large and too heavy to be carried by the JH-7 (just look how huge that pylon on a H-6G is !)

Most missiles that are OTH need mid course guidance. Page variety of ISR platforms will datalink and guide the missiles in. UAV, satellite, MPA, etc.

And yes, a missile's range is determined by its mass, fuel mass, aerodynamics, flight profile, and the efficiency of propellant.

... and how much bigger the missile itself is !

If the missile can be satellite guided or guided by some forward aircraft/drone, then it is solved.

Not if it is fast...

remember kids... ships go around at 30 kts. ... thats about 60km/hr, in 15 min flank speed can only move about 15 km away from initial starting position.

If a missile can cover 600 km in 15 mins... mach 2. at SL. ... and some nice search algorithms at terminal stage to do a search pattern with in only a 30 km radius...

This is what they really want in a fast missile....
