Has anyone noticed that the antennas on the spine and chin of the JF-17 Thunder have changed and do not have the protruding tube sticking out sideways at the end-length of the antennas? These antennas are similar in dimensions to the ones found on J-10Bs, F-15s and JAS-39s.

PShamim at PakDef has reported that PAC (Pakistan Aeronautical Complex) at Kamra now has the Air Frame building capability which has been done at Chengdu until now.

I think that this is not only a matter of gaining ability to make most of the aircraft in Pakistan. Perhaps more significantly it is also a transfer of responsibility to tweak the aircraft structurally if needed and make adjustments as the platform matures. This opens up a lot of possibilities for future.

Not to burst your bubble! Transfer the know how of making JF-17 does not imply PAF suddenly possess the know how of tweaking the aircraft. For example you want to make a twin seater.

You need plenty of facilities first. Does Pakistan has wind tunnel suitable for aircraft size testing? You need plenty of money first to invest in tools and talent before you can talk about changing the structure and make it work.

Look at turkey. They have been making F-16 but do they know how to tweak a F-16? I bet is no. Tot something is quite vague. A lot of key component is still restricted.

I will even rank Iran know how better than Turkey despite Iran not able to access plenty of high tech like Turkey.

None of the above considerations were implied in my post. I was not blowing any bubbles for others to burst, but merely pointing out that Pakistan has reached another stage in Aircraft production which opens new vistas. Being an engineer and having close to 20 years experience in manufacturing gives me some idea as to what possibilities lie within grasp. Do not underestimate us Pakistanis we have surprised nay-sayers often times.

Pakistan has had airframe building/overhaul capability for years, this is nothing new

infact Pakistan makes fuselage for the K-8 and the first aircraft was delivered last year

Pakistan has many precision guided machines and tools which allow it to carry out extensive work on its fleet of aircraft, which include JF17, but having these machines to do the work required and making these machines to carry out a tailored task are 2 very different things

it is very unlikely Pakistan will change or modify JF17 in anyway without help from China

Lets take a specific example. If PAF wants to fit a radar more than 700mm diameter, then there might be a need to push back the front plate of the electronic housing in the nose. That in turn might necessitate the adjustment to the nose by a few inches. This can be done at Kamra.

I recall that the Israelis extended the tail pipes of A4 planes to improve their chances of survival in 1973 war. I had meant tweaking in this context. Such small changes can be done and validated at Kamra without necessarily having to involve CAC.

The best course for pakistan aerospace engineering goes is prob partner up CAC on the even closer level.
i.e. send their engineers to CAC to every level of R&D and manufacturing process. may be even open up a joint venture with CAC or something like that.
in that way you can tap into china's resourses (windtunnels, experties, facilities) with out huge overhead investment.
having a formalized arrangement can be a conduit to tap into these resources.

Karma is a ok facility, but it is still not state of art. Even china's is not. even china itself is still learning but they have alot broader resources.

Saab is a good example
Sweden don't have the full range of aerospace infrastructure. so it has actively tapped into western european and american infrastructure for all of its military programs.... that's in every area, propulsion, aerodynamics (testing and experties), flight controls, weapons etc etc. either through direct license buy or partnership (BAe systems, GE)or indirect help. i.e. engineering experties from smaller companies.

Pakistan can do the samething. tap into Chinese and to lesser extent Russian & American resources while retain teh control over its own products. I think this is the way **** want to go, right?

The question is whether China allows such close interaction with a foreign nation. Having numerous foreigners walking around in its military plane-design/engineering facilities and potentially exposing its top military secrets might be a issue with the Chinese...
