Always good to bring back old story's of the PAF

During the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, a Pakistani pilot, Saiful Azam, flew for the Jordanian and Iraqi air forces and shot down three Israeli jets, all within 72 hours.

Block I testing new configuration.jpg

Shared at PDF by a Chinese poster "592257001" (strange name).

This evidently is an operational JF-17 of PAf being tested with new weapons configuration. Notice the assymetrical load. Apart from A2A WVR & BVR missiles, the plane is carrying two external fuel tanks and C-802 naval missile.

Can anyone guess if PLAN could make use of a limited number of FC-1 in a naval defense role? It might be a stupid question, but I am asking in relation to relatively fewer fighters considering the length of Chinese coast line and many maritime neighbors who have disputes with China.

The JF17 was too tailor made for Pakistan to suit China's needs.

Its biggest problem is its relative lack of range. That was an issue for the Air Force, and it will be an even bigger one for the navy (just look at a map of where all the maritime disputes are in relation of Chinese air bases).

In terms of naval operations, the PLAN is actually pretty well served for strikers. It has dedicated JH7A strike regiments as well as MK2s, and soon J15s coming online as well.

If that isn't enough strike power, integrating AShMs on J10s and J11s would be a far quicker and more effective solution than buying a whole new platform that has less range and payload than either of the former two to perform naval strike.

The JF17's biggest problem is that it overlaps too much with the J10. Whatever role you can think of for it within the PLAAF or PLANAF, the J10 does it better and is already well established.

With China's economy ticking over nicely, the PLAAF has the budget to move up market and can just use J10s to fill the numbers and act as the low end of its fighter fix as it looks to add more flankers and 5th gens to its arsenal in the future.

Hey PLAWolf do you think the JF-17 can be fitted with an electronic jamming device? If it can will the PAF be using the US or Chinese version of it?

Theoretically, anything compatible with MIL-STD-1760 could be used on JF-17(of course within weight and size limit), but you need some level of support from manufacturer to integrate equipment. So, my bet is on Chinese devices.

Btw, what is happening with Block II ?

I would guess September, but nothing can be certain since there is no official news at all. PAF has clamped on leaks and such and that is why we have not seen the first unit, which could already be made and going through trials. Externally there are expected to be very few difference between Block I and Block II. If seen flying, one could not say if one is looking at upgraded Block I or Block II, apart from the serial number.

We can not expect a squadron raised before the beginning of next year, since PAC shall be busy up-grading Block I aircraft.

Just wait and see.

Any idea how reliable this report is ??? ... again wishful thinking or finally - after so many year - a rethink of the PLAAF ???

CHENGDU, China: People’s Republic of China’s Department of Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs Deputy Division Chief and Chairman Sichuan province Development and Reforms Commission Lean Pyar has said that the JF-17 Thunder multi-role aircraft are being manufactured through a joint venture of Pakistan and China and these aircraft are being inducted now into the Chinese Air Force.

In an interview with The News, he said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had started this project jointly with the Chinese leadership in 1998. He said the entire Chinese nation had termed Pakistan their best ever friend in the world. He said China had specially built the JF-17 Thunder aircraft for Pakistan and the Pakistan Air Force was successfully flying these aircraft. Lean Pyar noted that Sichuan province’s bilateral trade volume with Pakistan stood at the level of $290 million. Sichuan province would complete projects worth $2 billion in Pakistan, he added.

I would not take any such claim seriously. In the matter of PLAAF/PLAN inducting JF-17, Pakistani sources are not to be trusted. It may happen, but IF and when it does, we will have Chinese sources confirming it.

I would only believe this if we have confirmation from China, not otherwise.
