JF-17/FC-1 Fighter Aircraft thread

I think the minimum requirement for Block III should be indigenous engine and AESA however it remains to be seen if they will make any structural changes if they have to redesign the nose cone to fit AESA in there

Maybe things like retractable IFR etc is possible too but I believe the Block I is the base model Block II is weapons integration and Block III could be a step up and have much more improved survivability

Either way a JF-17 equipped with a nuclear capable land attack air launched cruise missle like Ra'ad would send shivers down the enemy spine of any nation

To me that's more than a 5th generation fighter capability

Hey guys, I just read this article on WIB:

Is he for real? The JF-17 is the "Ultimate Mig-21"?

Or is he applying the logic that can used to describe the F-22 as the Ultimate Wright Flyer I?

Thanks!

The author, in his conclusion, wrote,
It might be a descendent of the 60-year-old MiG-21, but the JF-17 is a thoroughly modern warplane—and an affordable one.

I think it is fair.

Different intake, different Wing, different Engine, different empennage, different nose, different everything... and yet JF-17/FC-1 is an upgraded Mig-21. Some people can not get rid of fixed ideas. David Axe seems to be one of them.

The only thing that could be said to be similar is the philosophy of a 'numbers' combat air plane; the lo in a hi-lo mix.

It'll be quicker to list what the JF17 has in common with a Mig21/J7.

Lets see, they are all single engine aircraft with three wheels, 2 wings and 1 vertical stabilizer. Obvious evidence of family linkage!

And if you really want your mind blown, the JF17 takes the '1' from the Mig21 and the '7' from the J7 to get its number! What more proof do you need?!

I think in fairness the author was probably still referencing the original "super-7" program that was a Sino-US program for which Grumman took the lead in the late 80's before Tianamen Square. This program was much more an evolution of the J-7 that today's JF-17, but is often incorrectly cited.

But FC-1/JF-17 does decent from Super-7, however the designe drastically changed in the early 90s (due in large part to availability of RD-93) and become a new design.

while original Super-7 update path eventually yielded J-7FS, JL-9/FTC-2000. Which would be a direct decent line.

JF-17 on the other hand, is more like a related relative rather than a direct decent.
