About production rate: I do not think much of the "matching retiring rate" line. It seems to be a face-saving statement more than anything else. Many of PAF's Mirage III/IV need to go ASAP. Moreover, anyone with a bit of background in industrial production can tell what happens to Overhead & Fixed costs per unit when production rate takes a dip. Investing in infrastructure, training man-power, maintaining administrative setup, etc... for making 20+ planes a year and then producing only 7 units can not be for sake of matching rate of retiring.
Bottom line is that Government of Pakistan having been hostage to a cartel / coalition of corrupt politicians for the last so many years has impacted JF-17 program really hard. Our financial situation under new government seems to be improving and combined with a push for export of JF-17 / FC-1 we can hope for better progress of JF-17 program.
And I can tell you the naval JF-17 with C802 will be a very wellcome addition to the navy I bet they are really looking forward to operating them
The current fleet of naval Mirage 5 are very old and even although they have been through many overhauls they are becoming obsolete
The Exocet is a killer missile no question about it but the numbers in PN are limited and they are deemed precious by the navy, so much so that they don't even carry live Exocets anymore they are always usually dummy's
having JF-17 for the navy will be great no limitation in flying hours no restraint on any weapons load and they can fly them all day if they so wish, having extending range and coverage by AWACS is also a very welcome boast for the navy
On the last count I think there was 154 Mirage of all variants operating in Pakistan air force and navy, some of them are really in good shapes thanks to Rose upgrade and also we have the night attackers too but a great many of them are in need for urgent replacement
Also we have over 100 F7 to replace, a great interceptor but also a aircraft the needs to go, we can see that the JF-17 production can easily be 250 aircraft
Also I hope we can stop relying so much on ground intercept now that we have both balance beam Erieyes and Rotodome ZDK-03 AWACS to direct fighters to where the action is
50 x JF-17 Block I in 5 years, that's not a bad considering it took 8 years for 18 x F16 C/D Block 52+ to arrive
Now if we get 50 x JF-17 Block II in 2-3 years we are then doing really really good
I am just happy we have competed the 50 Block I under these turbulent times with the new government throwing its weight behind the project I hope they pour resources and money into Block II and make it happen
