CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — Japan's defense ministry wants funding to purchase Osprey aircraft starting next year, with the addition of more than a dozen tilt-rotor aircraft over the next few years, despite homegrown protests and concerns regarding the aircraft's safety.

The Ospreys safety standards have improved by leaps and bounds since it's introduction into service. Worry that it will drop out of the Sky is (Pardon it) Groundless. The Marines and JSDF would likely be getting C models which are so very much a different aircraft then the prototypes that proved so troubled that they might as well be a totally new aircraft.

The "Osprey Rash" is one of series of complaint from the anti base protesters as an excuse wanting Futenma and other US military bases in Okinawa removed.
The initial fear had subsided considerably from the general public seeing it land at various bases as the US Marines plays a PR pony show landing the vehicle around Japan.
The Defense Ministry still have not disclosed in which arm the Ospreys will be assigned to but I will bet a pretty penny JMSDF will allotted some to be placed on the "Flat top" escort ships to maximize efficiency as an amphibious assault ship.

I could see V22J's in any one of the JSDF missions its a very flexible platform. Escort and flat tops, troop transport, medevac right now there is work on a Tanker, and gunship.

Great carrier - sorry ship. My personal observation is that the Japanese has 2 important ingredients traditionally embedded in whatever they manufacture - and these are never easy. They have combined Art (aesthetics) and Science (high tech) into whatever they can build e.g. consumer electronics, cars, robotics etc. and in recent years military weaponries & naval ships. It's within their culture I suppose - i.e. the "can do" Samurai spirit.

A good read...

one puzzling aspect of recent Japanese ship design is the choice of C-band for the long range search component of the commonly deployed FCS-3 system. No other navy I'm aware of use a C-band radar for long range search purpose. C-band is very vulnerable to poor weather condition. For that reason, C-band is the most popular weather radar frequency.

according to the Japanese wiki page.

the decision to adopted C-band instead of S-band like the Aegis system was a controversial one.

pluses for the short wavelength C-band
1)better low attitude target detection
2)smaller lighter antenna
3)better ECCM due to wider bandwidth.
inferior compare to S-band
1)resistance to poor weather condition
2)long range performance.

while C-band may be the correct decision for smaller escort ship such as the Akizuki, IMO it is a poor choice for aviation ships such as the Hyuga and Izumo.

Actually, the Hyuga and it sister Ise are great vessels for what they were constructed for. My own contacts tell me that they are very sea-worthy, well armed, and have very good space and operational capabilities...again, for what they were designed for.

What information or documentation do you that indicates that they are, "sorry ships?"

They are very good ASW platforms and serve ably as the centerpiece of any ASW flotilla or task force the JMSDF would send to sea which is what they were designed to do.

I believe he just forgot a , in his posting.

"Great carrier - sorry, ship."

After all, JMSDF claims it is a through deck "destroyer" and not an aircraft "carrier".
Thanks SB...that sounds plausible.

The Hyuga class are in fact great ships.

VMT SamuraiBlue. Correct, I forgot to insert the comma. Japan has a long tradition of operating various kinds of warships and carriers, and its Navy was trained by the RN when it was first formed. The Japanese also purchased battleships from British shipyards in the 1920s, and subs from France. They were, and still are a highly professional Navy with a relatively long naval history. The USN has been a major influence of the re-established JMSDF. However, Japanese shipyards build most of its naval vessels now, and are likely to export some in future to friendly countries.
