Looks as if the Defense Ministry had selected home base for the Ospreys that they are going to acquire.

Saga Airport eyed as key base for protection of islands in East China Sea

The Defense Ministry intends to transform Saga city's commercial airport into a key military hub to protect outlying islands and counter China’s maritime advances in the East China Sea.

Specifically, the ministry plans to base controversial MV-22 Osprey transport aircraft at the northwestern Kyushu facility, which operates flights to Shanghai, Seoul and Haneda and Narita airports.

Its aim is to convert the airport into one used by both commercial and Self-Defense Force aircraft, much like Naha Airport on Okinawa.

Ryota Takeda, the parliamentary senior defense vice minister, is scheduled to meet with Saga Governor Yasushi Furukawa on July 22 to ask for his cooperation in implementing the ministry's plan.

Basing the Osprey at Saga Airport would place them closer to other important SDF facilities in the area critical to Japan’s strategy to defend its outlying islands, such as the uninhabited Senkaku Islands, which are at the center of a territorial dispute with China.....to read more

This could be an interesting tactic for Japan if there is any flare up in the Okinawa isles.
As the article mentions Ground SDF's Western Army Infantry Regiment trained as Marine are based in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture right next to the airport in question.

They can act as rapid response team in which the closest flat top destroyer cruises to the site as fast as they can and the rapid response team can move out on Osprey with minimum preparation and rendezvous midway using the Flattop as final staging area.
The requirements is that the flattops store necessary provisions(ammo and heavy gear) for the troops 24/7.
The response time at the scene with highly trained and equipped troops would probably be within 24 hours after call.

Can't say anything but, through pure speculation JMSDF may remove the type 88 SSM launchers and install the latest type 12 SSM into VLS creating more space for some other goodies.
Another possibility is with the recent technical exchange program Japan may ask for railgun technology from BAE.
I also believe they will install COGLAG type engine for their power train.
I wonder what kind of radar system they will integrate into this ship, FCS-3A or the AN/SPY-1D?

I guess time will only tell.

It says in the article that TRDI had already started development of the on-board type and is scheduled to go on line in FY2017.

(and several sites which regurgitated)

150b YEN is about $1.5b ... would be a good price for a new BMD-capable Atago-class, wouldn't it?

Well there it is. Two more Advanced Atago class DDGs. One to start building in 2015 the other in 2016.

Both to be active by 2020. Good vessels.
