Yes, they will need to be there in order to be embarked on the LHD or LHA that is stationed in Japan along with the CVN group there.

Now, the question is, will some of "Bravo" F-35s be cross deck on occassion to the Izumo class vessels? I bet they do.

I agree 100% sure they will!

How are they going to pay for all of that, especially if you want to increase the GSDF (people are usually the most expensive part of a build up)?

The jsdf increases its annual budget by 3% every year. Additionally if they reduce there tank force there would be a good amount of cash made available via reduced maintenance and upkeep.

That's my bet. The GSDF still has a number of Type74 MBTs in service or at least they did last time I checked. My money is these would be the bulk of the retired. Since the tank exports market is dominated by Russian, German and American products I highly doubt even if they wanted to they could sell them. So scrap is the bet with a handful going to displays and the target range to provide targets for type 10 tanks as they move to the forefront.

Cutting one hundred tanks won't save very much (like what, a few dozen million dollars?) in the grand scheme.

A 3% annual increase won't cover both the new personnel (especially that many new AEGIS destroyers) and the equipment, not by a long shot.

Well, Japan already has six AEGIS destroyers, so to get to eight, we are talking about two new AEGIS destroyers, and we are talking about 5000 men.

Now, not all of this will happen in a single year.

Japan is the fifth largest military budget in the world, behind the US, the PRC, Russia, and the UK. Currently it is about $ 60 billion per year. 3% is a $1.8 billion increase, with larger increments each year. It will take almost two years to build an AEGIS destroyer. It will cost about $1.8 billion. In that time they will have brought in $3.8 billion. In four years, they will have brought in an additional 7.8 billion, and the two AEGIS DDGs will have cost $3.6 billion of that. So, they can fund this if it is the increase that they want, with more than enough to incrementally build up the 5000 additional personnel in that same time frame.

Depending on what else they cut, decommission, scrap, etc., they can do more. The Japanese are very good (at least in the naval area) about continually turning over their naval combatants for new technology equipment every so many years. All of that has already been budgeted in the life cycle plans for their existing equipment. Adding two new AEGIS destroyers is something they can easily do if they so desire.

Thanks Jeff.
as for troop numbers that not a single year investment either, The JSDF has a high quality force, although iit operates in a unique manor in terms of personal rules. SDF is a volunteer force so the first step is recruiting the SDF is not the French Foreign Legion so paperwork for a recruiter and recruit is likely to take a few weeks minimum, then basic that's at least a few months, advanced specialty training can go for years. Building up an additional 5000 troops is a multiple year commitment it could take a decade to get to that goal.

Yes, but then there's the LCS class, whatever that is, and chances are that if they're increasing the GSDF despite cutting its armor, the JSDAF and maybe even the submarines will get new toys, not to mention increased O&M for all the new toys. .

As I stated, the Japanese Defense Forces spend 60 billion a year (now) and its increasing each year. All the forces will get new equipment (what you call toys). They are not toys. They are serious equipment for the defense of the Japanese people.

Anyhow, the LCS class will replace older light frigates and patrol class, just like the American LCS class is doing. So it's not like it is a completely new addition. As I sated, the JMSDF is very good at modernizing within the constraints of their budget and I expect most of their LCS class, which I do not expect will be like the US Navy's LCS class, will be done through that mechanism.
