Except the twin fins, from this angle it looks somewhat like the U-2.

Appearently rear visibility is not an important concern.

Well, that is the ATD-X technology demonstrator model, and it is not meant to ever see operational status, or any production outside of maybe a couple of the tech demonstrato prototypes.

It will not be full sized either.

But it is expected to fly in 2014, and it will provide a lot of info and technology testing for the Japanese.

It is meant to then provide the lead in to their atcual production aircraft development for the F-3, which will probably look somewhat different. That program will then kick off in 2016.

Objectivly the Japanese are looking to try and use the Technologies from the ATD-X to develup a kinda Japanese Raptor. A Airsuperiority fighter to replace the aging F15J series. As the F35A would be best suited to replacing augmenting there F1 Attackers and F2 fighters not counting any potential naval procurement.
Alternitively the Japanese have been offered a number of top gen 4.5+ fighter types including Eurofighter and Silent Eagle.

The canopy is appropriated from the T-4 to reduce cost and testing of emergency ejection.
The main objective in developing the ATD-X (Shinshin) is;

  1. Proof of concept of new sensor systems which includes multi function RF sensor to incorporate radar, ESM and ECM with a single AESA radar antenna. Also testing of smart skin technology.
  2. Integrated avionics system with Head Mount Display(HMD), Fly By Light(FBL) with a new man-machine interface.
  3. Field testing of the already developed 90cm diameter engine that can generate 15 tonnes dry thrust with thrust vectoring and super cruise capability.

Thought that the Japanese Air Force retired the F-1s already? Besides, F-35 will offer stop gag air superiority capabilities as well. It will be a capable platform when coupled with Aim-9x and will certainly have the low RCS advantage over 4th and 4++ gen fighters.

As for the Japanese Raptor... I think they are aiming for a sixth gen. fighter, at least that is what the Japanese military claims. Which does make sense, since we won't be expecting it until the mid-2030s. By that time new 5th gen. fighters will no longer be state of the art.

your right they were in 2006. As for Gen six I am skeptical that there will be enough of a difference between these new up coming fighters and the current Gen five. Especially since all most all the new super features could probably be integrated into top of the line Gen fives.

Re: JMSDF Akizuki Class DDG (19DD AEGIS-like)

...this means the Sea Ceptor can be quad-packed in Sylver VLS cells.
I agree.

But has anyone purchased the Sea Cepter missiles and quad-packed them yet?

If not, it begs the question, why not?

This would be a significant capability and provide much better layered defense for any vessel which had them. By dedicating 8 of the 48 cells on a Daring or Horizon class DDG to Sea Cepters, you would end up with 40 long to medium range missiles and 32 short to medium range missiles.

Anyhow, at this point that capability has been recognized and is being deployed by several nations with the ESSMs, like the Jaoanese are doing here with the Akizukis.

US marine corps is due to get F35B in 2017 and will be deployed to Japan it's been agreed between Tokyo and Washington

Either way if JMSDF buys F35B or not they will be operating off JMSDF flat tops or doing cross decking like V22 did

USN or JMSDF, one or the other we will see F35B from JMSDF flat tops

Ah...I see that now.

This was anounced just a few weeks ago that NX selected the Sea Cepter for the upgrade to their two Anzacs.

I am surprised they did not go with the ESSM, since their Mk-41s and their fire control would all have been a very easy path.

but the Sea cepter is going to be a great missile, and the UK will be unsing them on the Tyep 23 frigates after 2016, and then later on the Type 26 frigates too.

Naval Technology said:
The New Zealand Ministry of Defence (MoD) has selected MBDA to provide Sea Ceptor for the local area air defence (LAAD) system in support of the Royal New Zealand Navy's (RNZN) Anzac-class vessels systems upgrade programme.

Subject to government final approval, the MBDA-built Sea Ceptor will be deployed onboard HMNZ Te Kaha (F77) and Te Mana (F111) to offer air defence capability for the host ships and nearby allied vessels.

The New Zealand MoD defence deputy secretary, Des Ashton, said that the Anzac-class vessels systems upgrade programme aims to restore the ship's combat capability and utility to a comparative level to that of a current generation, new release combat system.

"The LAAD Sea Ceptor system is a key component of the overall project, ensuring that crucial constituents of the RNZN fleet are best equipped to respond to the emerging threats and protect not only the frigates themselves, but also high value units in company," Ashton said.

"The UK is immensely proud of this product."Sea Ceptor can simultaneously deal with multiple targets, flying at speeds of up to Mach 3 and is based on the common anti-air modular missile (CAMM).

The UK's international security strategy minister, Dr Andrew Murrison, said the New Zealand MoD is procuring Sea Ceptor and is planning to cross deck onto the Type 26 Global Combat Ship.

"The UK is immensely proud of this product, it is a real example of UK innovation and will form the bedrock of air defence for the Royal Navy for decades to come," Murrison said.

"This decision by New Zealand further demonstrates the strengthening of our maritime security cooperation."
