JS Kaga is currently undergoing a refit, so as to start accommodating the F-35B platform.
Part of said modifications is an enlargement of the flight deck, something that can be seen in this latest photograph.

As a reminder, here is the bow of the ship before the refit.

Japanese military helicopter crashes in sea with 10 on board

Gen. Yasunori Morishita, chief of staff of Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF), said searchers had found what appeared to be parts of the the UH-60JA helicopter in the sea and are continuing to scan the ocean for survivors.
If no survivors are found, the crash would be Japan’s deadliest military aviation accident since 1995, Japan’s Defense Ministry said.
The missing troops include two pilots, two mechanics and six passengers, among them Lt. Gen. Yuichi Sakamoto, a senior GSDF commander, Morishita said.
The 2 US F-16 made emergency landings right next to the recent GSDF helicopter crash site. Coincidence?

The most interesting thing is that rumors of "helicopters being shot down by China" have been circulating among Japanese netizens, which directly forces the Japanese government to publicly clarify.
If the two F-16 doing emergency landing nearby is the same day and time.. It's looking more like yankee hotheads wanting to make a pass near an helicopter for fun and taking it out...

It's a lose-lose situation for Japan and the US. Depending on which way a Japanese netizen can look at it, either Japan and the US are impotent in the face of Chinese attack, or US technology is super bad and Japan depends on it.

Conspiracy theory C I hadn't considered: the US is destroying Japan's senior military leadership on behalf of Chinese interests. Bonus points: it'll force Japan to buy new helicopters.
