Beautiful ship...though I do not know if I would call is the Akizuki "successor".

More of an ASW oriented follow-on.

They may have sacrificed some of the inherent battle management capabilities for air defense with strong ASW, and still maintained a strong air defense capability.

So, you have a vessel that looks a lot like an Akizuki, less the aft facing phased arrays near the hanger...but with the same number of VLS.

They only plan two of these vessels too.

So, four AAW-centric Akizukis followed by two ASW-centric Asahis
