These JMSDF vessels are really decent patrol missile boats. I wish they had built eighteen of them instead of just the six.
Doesn't have the range nor the capacity for patrolling around Okinawa.
They are scheduled to be decommissioned around 2021 when JMSDF launches the 3000t new escorts or the 30DX but they may gain a new lease of life since they are offered to the Philippine Navy which will make better use of them with so many islands closely packed.

Understood...but had they built more, and the infrastructure to support them, they could have based a squadron of four or six of them wherever necessary.

As it is, they would serve the Philippines well.

Wen are we going to know something more of the new 3000t escorts in terms of specs, or the 30DX?

Although I have heard that TRDI of MoD will start development of the surface launched XASM-3 I think they will start from land launch models considering the previous examples.
They may be the range enhanced version of the type 11 ship launch ASM I had been hearing about.
I believe they had enhanced the range to 200Km so it can cover Senkaku from the shores of Miyako islands.

Seems like an OK option within around 500M USD per unit (and two per year). It should become the main JMSDF workhorse in the coming decades I assume.

Looks as if MoD had decided on the winner of the 30DX project.
The date within the PDF states it was announced yesterday.
It looks as if it is going to be heavier than previously rumored and will have a gas turbine and diesel electric hybrid CODAG motor.

Brilliant Japan is doing great

Plenty of warship tonnage so when are they going to announce more "excercises" in return of Northern Korean missile test ?

Put those SM-3 to use and forward station them to intercept incoming missiles

They are doing as NATO did during Russian take over of Crimea, announcing more excercises

Yes now that is a huge deterrent, like it's never worked before
