HQ-12A isn't the HQ-2, certainly not. The design reminds me a lot more of the old US Hawk missiles.

A cheaper next generation aircraft along side the more expensive and technological consuming one would be a very low RCS Chinese flanker, with engine placement alterations and air inlets.

Should PLAAF really want a "hi-low" mix for its 5th Gen. fighters, the "low" end would be a stealthy J-10 variant but not flanker, because it is just too damn hard to make Su-27s low-observable.

Is there a possibility of PLAAF looking into a single-engine and lower-cost 5th generation fighter to supplement the larger version in development?

It'd make sense to build a single engined 5th generation fighter, for cost saving measures if nothing else. You don't need a twin engined J-XX to carry out every mission.

I don't think the upcoming modded J-10 will be 5th generation. Rather the hi-lo mix would be 5th generation + 4.5 generation fighter.

If they add RCS reducing features to J-11B, they can do it to J-10 too. I think they can redesign it for DSI and change the single tail to double V for lower RCS. Of course upgrade the radar to AESA and add TVC version of WS-10A.

For single engine aircraft the engine must be extremely reliable and fast start up time. China turbofan sector doesnt have that kind of reliability yet to install domestic engines for single engine fighters its currently most advance turbofan WS-10A has a slower start up time than its Russian counterparts.

For double engine fighters (eg. J-11) the WS-10A will do fine but for single engine aircraft (eg.J10) it isnt up to scratch.

If China wont allow WS-10A to be fitted into J-10 due to reliability issues they sure as hell wouldn't install them on their most advance fighter jet.

Current PLAAF is pretty sufficient my thought would for J-XX is that its aspect is the same as F-22 but its secondary role is for nuclear strike missions. A Fighter-Bomber stealth aircraft with agility like fighter aircraft and stealth as a stealth bomber.

J-11 RCS reduced from 25+ to 5 which is a substantial amount no reason why the J-10 cannot also reduce its RCS

the slower start up time issue has been sorted out a long time ago. Reliability is still an issue, but WS-10A is slowly sorting out all the initial problems. AL-31FN itself certainly is no golden standard for reliability. We know J-10s are already equipping WS-10A.
