J-35 carrier fighter (PLAN) thread

In terms of flying prototypes there should be at least two: 350001 and 350003, since mid last year.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if more have been produced since then.
Somehow I completely forgot that 350003 was a thing… Also I assume 350002 would be the statics testing airframe?

Anything smaller than J-20 or Flanker radome is tiny now?
I mean, I do want to know what are the considerations behind radome size. What allows the J-20 to have such a large radome and the J-35 to not? Even the F-22, which is also a twin engine heavy fighter does not have a particularly ‘oversized’ radome. If the benefits of a large radar are so obvious, why didn’t Lockheed (in this example) do it? Genuinely curious

The size of an aircraft's radome is a function of multiple things but the most important factor is arguably the size of your overall aircraft.

I think getting into the weeds of this would be off topic, but regardless, siege is right in responding to minusone by stating that J-XY/35's radome is hardly small.

I would expect J-XY/35 to have a similar radome size to F-35 or perhaps even a bit larger.

Not to mention the J-XY/35 will also have a much newer radar compared to the F-22 and F-35 (well F-35 block 4 will get a new radar).

Which I would say would surely be better than F-22 and F-35 (90s and 00s radar tech, maybe 10s) and even the J-20 (also 90s/00s tech, although bigger area might still make it better in some areas).

F-22 and F-35 radars still aren’t even GaN lol. Pretty much every Chinese radar now is GaN. J-35 will also be twin engine so likely more electrical power and cooling from bypassed air is available as opposed to single engine F-35
