Re: New Generation Fighter

is this indicative of how far China's 4th gen project has progressed?Wen said "we can DESIGN the world's best fighter"...so they are still designing?
Well it could also indicate that they have a design that is comparable or on par with other fighters, though it not being the leading one out of the group. Though they can build a design that IS the best.

An article regarding important people like Hu Jintao visiting CAC:

I think Hu Jintao and WenJiabao both made the visit here, so this is a pretty big occasion. It pretty much spelled out that CAC is developing the next generation fighter jet. And it also indicates that they have numerous major project in the works. They are also confident about developing the best fighter jet in the world and so forth.

tphuang, I think those article is quite PR talk. With VIP like Hu coming. Of cos must say the best word.

Hopefully they can really produce quickly a 4th(5th) generation fighter since PAK FA prototype has flied.

Ever since AVIC 1 went back on its word regarding the new transport plane prototype. Some of the official word from China cannot be trusted.

Here's the PAK-FA video... Very Russian.

oooohhhh 0.o

Looks like a YF-23 - but does the thing have stabilators? at 0:30 I swear I can see a small line next to the left engine... And the engine's aren't particularly stealthy either it seems; they don't have serrations, nor are they flat. It also has like.. a bump on the nose, probably being the IRST. Won't it being so round compromise stealth slightly?
At least the engine intake is kinda S shaped... unlike the flanker(s)

This plane'll probably have its weapons all in the underbelly, because the landing gear retracts to the sides, like that of the Su-27, giving little room for side ones like the F-22 has for sidewinders. I wonder if missiles will be stacked on top of each other for the T-50..

Still, kudos to the Russians, now for more pictures and videos!

(PS, that news reader was hot)

Doesnt look too stealthy, specially its rear. Its awesome to think that russia fighter tech in 2010 cant match USA fighter tech in 1990 (F-22 maiden flight). Still its something. Better then china, which has yet to build a totally indigenous fighter. It will take many years and a LOT of effort to catch up

kroko,

Firstly, its not how stealthy it looks to your eyes, but how reflective it is to a radar. You cannot just tell by the looks whether it is stealthy or not. Having said that, it probably won't be as stealthy as F-22 (but then it also won't be that expensive either). It really depends on how agile it is, how advanced are its avionics and sensors and what kind of RAM skin it gets.

Secondly, it is not like Russia kept designing a plane but couldn't make it. After the Soviet collapse, lots of project funding got dried up. If the soviet hadnt collapsed, we could have probably seen this fly in the 90s. But still, US had mostly lead in technology especially in the fighter section.

Thirdly, todays fighter jets usually transcend just one country. You do not have to be able to build every part to be able to make a plane. Even while some of its subsectors catch up, China could still put a plane up. It remains to be seen how long it will them China to test its 5th generation plane and how good it will be.

of course it's PR talk. What do you mean AVIC1 went back on its word? It was never about seeing an actual prototype, but a model of the prototype and Maya showed that a while ago. You won't see the actual prototype and first flight until probably 2012 fro the large transport.

The Chinese next gen plane is estimated to make first flight in 2011.

They claim a prototype of the transport plane will be showed. Yes, I don't expect a working or flying prototype but at least a scale 1:1 mock up.

In the end ,none!
