Anti-China comments are not surprising. I love the comments to the effect that the US should not pay its obligations of China buying treasuries. It's trending Top 10 on Yahoo. And SDF has hit a record number of visitors at one time today.

Looks like the engines (or engine nozzles, at least) on this prototype is different --anyone care to speculate?:

From this angle it looks closer to the WS-10 than any other engine.

Can't tell if it's 2001 or 2002 though.

The 2001 prototype is prob the one that featured in the vid that appeared earlier. For reference, someone else on another forum made the observation that the sound of the engine in the leaked video sounded more or less like the Su_27 here which is equipped with Russian AL-31FN.

IMHO, the first pic shows the prototype 2002.

Hmmm ... that's really strrange !

With the picture on the bottom I thought to be sure that's the AL-31FN ... but now ... looks very strange.

Otherwise I can't think that they already have both prototypes finished.

Let's wait and see ....

Obviously, whoever took those pictures did a very good job in covering up the proto numbers. Very pro indeed.:)

Which pic to leak is controlled by the government/mods on those Chinese bbs...I am pretty sure there are clearer pics showing the prototype number out there. Better vids will be allowed to come out slowly and gradually after the maiden flight.

You have sharp eyes.

But I read from some Chinese forums, the witnesses at the scene swore the plane is No.2001 not 2002. The 2002 has come out for a while, but no one mentioned its nozzles were different from 2001's before.

that's risky, for ensure J-20 maiden flight success, they will still use mature engine Al-31s.
they may replace higher thrust indigenous engines later, it will take many times of flight test in a period, no rush.

Maybe they just test them, than they will take them off and replace them with AL-31s for maiden flight, then there will be a WS-10 versioned "maiden flight" followed, and then they will get the AL-31s on again, and so on. The AL-31 will always take the lead just for caution untile its thrust is insufficient to perform the advanced tests.
