What makes me wonder is in what size it will be ?!

Some rumours say in the heavy class or about the Flanker (IMO too large) ... others say the engines were smaller and so overall a fighter in the size of the Super Hornet (IMO a perfect supplement).

I am inclined to think that this will be larger than a flanker. It needs to in order to house large internal payloads. The Super Hornet sized fighter is probably the naval stealth fighter.

There is a strong correlation between size and cost, at least when comparing aircraft of the same generation. So it is fine to say a big aircraft is the high aircraft since it will also almost certainly be more expensive than a similar-aged smaller plane.

Honestly, that might best be left to something more akin to a bomber, or to stealth weapons pods/stealthy weapons. At some point having a bigger strike fighter just for the purpose of increased payload becomes impractical.

27th flight today. Looks like no one even cares about the flights any more.
LoL, don't say that when Deino's around.

Honestly though, I think all of us are just waiting for something to change now (new air frame/new engines/maneuvers).

There is an even stronger correlation between the sophisication of avionics on board and cost. You could have a plane that is larger than J-20 but fitted with cheaper avionics and this plane would be the low-end, even though it is bigger.

I hope nobody today is still confused from time to time with all the 4th vs. 5th gen. talk which can mean the same thing in the same breath... :)

Lol, must be pretty confusing for those who are not aware of the 2 different naming conventions. We're talking about China new generation fighter over here in this thread. So it's safe to assume that over here:

4th Gen = Chinese 4th Gen which is equivalent to Western 5th Gen
5th Gen = Western 5th Gen which is equivalent to Chinese 4th Gen

well, some really good high res photo will be great too, and more angles, not expecting any though, cause PLA is not going to release any chase plane photos any time soon, and hmm... they need to work on how to shoot great photos too

not expecting any changes so soon, that will probably come with 2003/04, i think 2001 will stay pretty much the same till it become a museum piece, think of it as the J-10A 1001

about the weight/size talk, another way to look at it is engine, we know the current mature engine China has is WS-10 so the aircraft will probably be built around it, a pair of WS-10 will indicate a F-15/Flanker sized aircraft (though i too prefer Deino's Hornet mix)

where is this SAC J-XX place in the future PLAAF force? will it be cheaper than the J-20? i hope so, because CAC's J-20 won the competition, but if it's a near J-20 analog my feeling is SAC not letting this competition go down till any bird enters PLAAF service, don't want J-20 remains a prototype forever do we? (or perhaps some will when SAC's J-XX appears and turns a few heads)

where have we heard that story of the premier superiority fighter aircraft cut down to a smaller number in favor of the cheaper, more flexible and multirole aircraft.... and don't forget PLA is cheap :p

SAC is betting on something
