Or it could be that this VTOL plane doesn't exist partly because of its complexity. A bigger reason is that no branch in the PLA requires a VTOL aircraft over conventional. GGwp

One thng I like about VTOL aircraft is that it can be hidden almost anywhere, where it's safe from precision weapons, especially those satellite guided ones.

actually i they're just more mobile in general.
for a country that has many of their airfields at risk to enemy airstrikes VTOL, or the ability to operate from highways (gripen) is very useful -- or even if you can only afford pocket carriers with harriers or F-35Bs. But China doesn't exactly have many air bases at risk nor are they planning for LHAs with a fixed wing strike capability. That role is relegated to dedicated aircraft carriers.
I do not see a rationale behind a PLA VTOL aircraft, and certainly SAC's up and coming fighter is not VTOL.

The only thing going for it is that the chinese might have some interest in the yak-141 and there might be some russian co operation (#richard fisher) -- and all in all that's nothing going for it...

like pulling it out of the earth for usage 2000 years after the rest of the world has been wiped out? (referring to battlefield earth) XD

But first you have to move it to a hiding spot, you would need to know in advance an attack is coming.
So in a surprise attack it won't matter. Also I doubt that any nation precision strike weapons can wipe all of aircraft base, let alone the ones inland.

I did a bit of calculation. It took 15 seconds for the J-20 to take off while it took 13 seconds or less for the J-10B to take off.

Just because an aircraft is VTOL capable, that doesn't mean it can land everywhere it pleases. It can only lands where logistic support can go.

Not wanting to be a buzzkill, but the J-20 take off wasn't that exciting -- I mean it wasn't much of a climb after it got airborne :-/
But still glad it got in the air along with J-10B and JF-17. Hopefully we'll see some cooler takeoffs either later during development or zhuhai 2020 :p

What are you talking about? The J-20 left ground faster than the JF-17 and only slightly slower than the Taihang equipped J-10B.
