So it does, I really need to stop going purely off memory and doubt check before speaking in future. :p

J-20 taking the whole length of the otherwise empty flight deck of a flattop without angle deck for take off looks truly odd.

Not to mention all that debris lying on the deck after firing its missiles at the blast deflector?

Oh I dunno I think it folds quite similar almost identical to F-22, the difference is the serrations and possibly a slight difference in "area" distribution between the panels

It looks to me the 2 panels are not folded. Instead, the much narrower panel (nearest to the side) opens out to a vertical position (90 degrees), with the wider panel opening out all the way to about 120 degrees.

I don't see the "much narrower panel" you mention and if it isn't there the wider panel must carry an extension similar to the configuration in F-22.

At that position, the narrower panel is only about 10 inches down, and, in the picture, it can be seen on the left side of the J-20 where the hinges to the panel should be.

On the other hand, I can't see the folded panels. Anyway, a few more pictures should clear things up.

Right, now I have managed to confuse myself.

I was a little troubled by how my memory seemed to have let me down so badly before, so when I had the chance I did a little digging, and what do you know, I was not imagining things as this was the picture I was thinking of when I made my original statement about the F22 weapons bay folding more compact.

From my picture, you can see that the weapons bay seems to fold in on itself so only about half of the length of the bay itself sticks out.

But on the picture you posts, only a small wedge is folding up, like the J20 picture also.

So does the F22 weapons bay have two fold settings? Or did the make any changes on the production aircraft?

Hmm maybe if we have a frontal picture of the F-22 opening its weapon bay in flight it would clear things up.

Er no I don't think the narrower panel (shouldn't it be nearer to the inside rather than side?) is vertical, it's horizontal, so the final configuration is like a "Z" shape on both J-20 and F-22

EDIT:

these shows what I'm talking about

@plawolf, I'm wondering if the perspective of the pic you posted might be showing the "inner" panel folding "against" the outer larger one where in reality it's not as folded as it is?
Of course it could be possible like you said F-22 can fold weapon bays to different ways when it's in flight and on the ground but right now I'm not convinced of that. What I am convinced of however, is that J-20's weapon bays open in a similar if not identical way to F-22's when both are on the ground.

So yeah I think even in flight the F-22's waepon bay opens in more of a "Z" shape with the "inner panel" only slightly folding "into" the larger side panel, but only very slightly. So I can't say there's a different degree of "opening" when the plane's on the ground or airborne... especially going by the last picture in my last post. Compare with the below and it seems to correlate well
J-20 seems to open similarly with the same "Z" shape.

Maybe overkill posting so many pics but no harm, it's a good looking plane and all ^.^
