also, just what does j20 use its internal body volume for, then? its engines cant be noticably bigger than f119. its fuel consumption may be a bit higher, but we still cant be talking about 30% higher consumption, that would be silly. if j20 is around 20 meters long, then we can compare its images with images of f22 and asess the width and length of its fuselage. and deduce its volume. and the fuselage volume is AT LEAST 6 cubic meters larger. what does a combat plane do with so much more volume?? it'd be inefficient to use it all for extra fuel.

You forgot about the intake ducts.

well i took J-20 numbers from the recent Huzhigeng number
F-22 numbers from wiki
and T-50 numbers from Paralay's own drawing, let's just say the T-50's number is provisional, but hey the engine is a fit ;)

Well eyeballing whether the engine sizes look right isn't quite accurate.

But I see now, the PAK FA drawing on paralay lists T-50 as 20.9 meters long -- I'm not sure how recent that is, but a comparison paralay made in late may gave J-20 about a half meter more than PAK FA. Also comparisons between the flanker and T-50 during the first flight and the airshow gave numbers in the 19m range.

From MAKS 2011, the image I was expecting!
Almost no error of perspective.
The information we have is the length of Flanker: ~ 21.90 m
Given this, and counting pixels, is that the PAK FA has a length of ~19.30 m.
This confirms the estimates of Paralay!

^^ i didn't mean it to be really accurate ;)

i still have some reservation about the pic above, AFAIK the 3 planes were flying in an arrow formation (seen a pic, probably in sukhoi.ru forum), and that is going to make the measurement off a bit (if not quite abit, depending on the distance between the a/cs)

what seemingly close on air shows can be quite a few metres apart

Really depends if they are in formation I suppose.

But previous estimates have placed it in the 19m range as well -- there was a flanker chase plane for the T-50s maiden flight which people used to get pretty good estimates.
In any case I'm quite confident PAK FA is not longer than J-20.

The T-50 is actually quite close to the "Raptor size". Given the fact that it took weigh saving measures such as a thinner body and all moving vertical stabilisors there is a good chance that it might be the lightest of the "big three".

Could be why we keep hearing about the potential thrust of the WS-15 constantly being pushed up?

I don't quite see the connection. Has WS-15's thrust been constantly being pushed up?

If I remember correctly, a couple of years ago the target being circulated around was 150-160 kn, and now we're hearing 180 kn. It's probably just bad information though.

Found on sina.com. This is said to be J-20 engine. Thrust seems to be too low, huh?
