Interesting that they mention the "J-18" as having VSTOL... yet it's said to be similar to the Su-33.

Throw in a bit of BS to try to make the official press look "ignorant" and "unknowing", or simple misreporting, or the J-18 actually exists?
I think the truth is somewhere in between the three.

And a 1 hour 25 minute flight isn't bad -- more than enough to retract the landing gear and test the weapon bay doors... Maybe that's what they did, thus we see the weapon bay doors open for inspection after the test?

Bear in mind that Japanese newspapers are known to often publish unsubstantiated sensational reports, either to generate circulation or to provoke a response.

We never know. One old Chinese war-doctrine is 暗渡陈仓:

"Leak" info... get all the REAL fans crowded at the fence of the airfield... and I actually doing whatever I do, at far far away, 3000m height...

The report from GlobalTimes is unusually bold: not only they mention F22 and not F35 or Pak-Fa as rival of J20, they also mention a J18 in development, and finally they affirm that by 2021 China aviation will be on par with the ones of other giant nations in aerospace.
While they acknowledge that the main weakness of China is their civilian engine sector, they seem confident that in only a decade thay can close the gap. Considering that currently China does not produce even engine for ARJ21, that are DC9 like i think, this is a very bold and optimistic statement. I think this is a very good sign, because chinese are usually very shy and conservative in their estimate and assessement of their own power (is a tradition since Sun-Tzu).

Well just floating someone else's idea that the ground one is a more anatomically accurate prototype for studying while the flying one is simplified to test aerodynamic handling.

Except how the weapons bays doors would interact with the air flow and affect the flight characteristics of the plane is going to be one of the KEY aerodynamic testing goals.

Weapons bays are not like landing gear doors that only need to be cleared for a very specific and restricted range of speeds and maneuvers. A stealth fighter would ideally want to be able to fly with its weapons bays wide open throughout its flight envelope so it can shoot AAMs any time during high-G dogfights.

To see how the weapons bay doors affect the aerodynamics would require you to put weapons bays doors in so they can be opened and flight tested. Considering weapons bays was always a key requirement, it is plainly silly to suggest a prototype would not have it.

The only people who tend to support the idea that there isn't weapons bays are the ones who are desperately wishing it was only a tech demonstrator so they can push the possible in-service date of the J20 a far off into the future in their heads as they can.

Yes it is. Is there any other evidence of the J-18? Oh did these guys not do their research.

You do realize that just because its a Chinese paper does not make it a CCP mouthpiece right? Hell, even if it was Xinhua, I would first look at the source. If it was an editorial, I would still not take it as gospel. Only if they quoted high-ranking in-service PLA commanders or top level political figures would you be able to treat the statement as official belief.

As it is, I would not give it any more credibility than editorials from any other people. The fact its published in China does not automatically make it an authority on top secret PLA projects and even more secret future ambitions.
