Same guy who leaked J-10B tvc’s maiden flight claims that six TVC equipped J-20s will be produced before end of this year.

Seems a little odd to me that they would produce such a limited version of non TVC WS-10 equipped J-20s before switching to TVC equipped J-20s.

It looks like the production is still one J-20 per month.

I wonder when we will see the J-20 which were produced in 2019 till now, with non-TVC WS-10.
hi siegecrossbow

So production is one per month?
I doubt it will be Russian TVC, China wouldn't switch to non-TVC WS-10 if it had been waiting for Russian engines.

I wonder if both might be produced in parallel.

While possible, I don’t see why they would...if there’s parallel production I would expect the 6 to be test planes and not production planes, but the poster describes these planes as 量产 which means at least the leaker thinks these are production planes.

But hasn't the TVC system already been tested on the J-20 sometime ago?

Why would CAC produce the TVC and non TVC Taihang J-20s in parallel though? Wouldn't it make sense to only produce the TVC version because it is superior? It would be quite puzzling to see TVC and non TVC J-20s together being produced.

If the rumour is real, I suspect the airframes are probably built from the same production line that is building production J-20s.

It wouldn't be a huge deal to produce a fraction of the annual J-20 production count to a half dozen TVC aircraft.
If they only build six TVC WS-10 J-20s in total, I expect those six aircraft to still be fully combat capable as well, though probably serving most of their life in units for developing advanced tactics and trials etc.
And if they build more than six TVC WS-10 J-20s, there is likely a higher chance they will be regular combat capable.

If they eventually produce TVC and non-TVC WS-10 powered J-20s in parallel for an extended period (say, half and half for 3 years, just throwing a random number out there), I would have to surmise there's some sort of reason why they would produce both in parallel where one is more desirable than the other but has a bottleneck therefore limiting the engines that can be produced annually.

There is a chance that the TVC equipped J-20s will go to Dingxin initially since they could better emulate the Raptor in close-in combat. They could also be used to gain experience flight experience for WS-15 tvc later down the pipeline.
