i am truely stunned by this: back in 2022Jan we saw CB0256, 10 months later we got CB0370

Just saw one or two in the Weibo comment section claiming that the J-20 with serial number CB037X has been spotted since last year. Not sure whether the claim can be verified or not.

If the claim is true, then the number of J-20s would've already well past 200, as Batch 04 could very well have been built by now.

Besides, there are 5 J-20s in Zhuhai yesterday, of which we saw the serial numbers on 2 of them. What about the other 3?

Interesting informative comments found under @Deino's FB post regarding the newfound J-20 serial numbers.

This is quite normal and same with every air force. For pla, 24 out of 30 are pmai and the remaining 6 are for training and spares and such. Not that different from USAF where probably similar % of f35s are pmai.

I would rather take it with a grain of salt. Why does PLARF keep J-20 in reserve meanwhile 5th gen fighter is in high demand both in training and patrolling.

I am not trying to be pessimistic here, but do we have hard evidence that CB0XYZ exactly means? X is batch number for sure however the last two digits can mean XXth within the same batch or XXth in total production. I am looking for counter evidence against the latter one. For example, are there any photos indicating a production number like CB0101 or CB0310 to confirm the last two digits are counted independently between batches?

If we could confirm it, the total units would be at least 18 + 40 + 56 + 70 = 184.
