Maybe because E-7's radar is operating L Band, they think it will be able to detect stealth aircraft further out.

That would be my guess, E-3 is higher frequency S-band against which the LO measures on a fighter-size stealth aircraft should be more effective.

I am interested to know if this is true. If so, it would seem that the f-35 may not be so invincible after all, well according to the western media any way

My speculation is J20 had the advantaged position, they called it professional.

if the f35 was in an advantaged position we probably see the pilot’s legs up in a posting
Yeah, knowing how US media operates, if the F-35 was even allowed to leave with its dignity intact, headlines would have blasted over every Western news channel, "F-35 gets the Drop on China's Paper Dragon Pretend Stealth Fighter." Instead, the US general said, "An Encounter had occurred," with an expression like a guy who just realized that the dude who keeps coming to see his wife when he's at work isn't actually her cousin. Probably they had one F-35 pilot skid off the carrier on the return and the other one spend 6 hours locked in the shower before they dragged his souless body to therapy. "It... it just appeared. Out o' nowhere. Skies were clear. Me n' Peppy were flyin' side-by-side, chattin'... 'bout the wife n' kids n' blueberry pies n' such... ya know (nervous smile)? And then the skies just darkened. I looked up... and there... there... there were... these... these... these... (Therapist: "These what, Jim? It's ok to let it out.") Big... black... dragon nuts right above my canopy.... (Curls up and begins to cry)."

It is a bit odd that it isn't getting much attention in mainstream press. You'd think that a historic moment (first intercept of a fifth gen by another fifth gen) would get more attention. Instead, only flight global and aviationgeek club reported it.

And if true again a surprise... IMO a two-folded one! :D

First if this image is legit and not again a faked one, the 56th Air Brigade assigned to the Central Theater Command based at Zhengzhou and currently flying J-10B & J-10AS seems to have gained its first J-20A.

... and second since I expected yet another Su-30MKK unit like the 54th or 85th AB to become the PLAAF's next unit to convert to the J-20A.

What do you think?

Love to know the circumstance of the encounter. Was it a chance encounter or an interception ?

If it was an interception, the interceptor side probably detected the opponent's stealth fighter, and with what ? The implication is significant.

Is this from a good source? It would not be surprising if the delivery at the end of last year delivered 4 J-20s to a new unit imo. And I also think it's more likely for J-20A to replace J-10 than su-30, since the former is air superiority aircraft and J-20 is only used in that role thus far.
