At the time of the F-35C crash Yankee was implying that it was something that PLAAF did that spooked the pilot, hence why in that thread I made this comment:

Perhaps J-20 was involved.

No the f-35 crashed because the pilot clearly made a mistake during landing.
Well *someone* has been flying 'tic-tac' type drones very close to USN warships operating off San Diego and also over the THAAD battery on Guam. I think we're looking for a near-peer competitor of the USA with a strong interest in collecting SPY and THAAD radar signals, and highly advanced drone technology. Any ideas who that could be?
Operating off San Diego . That is probably andruil long endurance hybrid drone.

I don't think we should make too much of the phrase he used. My impression is that USAF has certain level of respect for the latest PLAAF and hardware. They are taking this challenge very seriously. That's the best we can make sense of it.

He also mentioned that E-3C is not particular useful in 5th generation world, because it can't detect J-20 at useful range. He was advocating for more E-7s. That brings the question of whether or not the latest AWACS AESA radar would be able to track J-20 at useful range. I suspect it would still be hard for E-7 to track J-20 outside of PL-15 NEZ front frontal view. Maybe it's possible from the side. Maybe USAF assess J-20 RCS to be an order of magnitude higher than F-35. Maybe because E-7's radar is operating L Band, they think it will be able to detect stealth aircraft further out.

On the flip side, I'd be curious to know how far out KJ-500 would be able to detect F-35. Not really sure the radar band on there. I'd guess either L or S band.

Wow … and now I would like to know under what circumstances this encounter happened.

Probably just normal combat air patrols.

Stealth fighters are still fighters, and do regular patrol and interception of unknowns type missions.

As more 5th gens enter service in the region (J-20s in particular), these "stealth meets stealth" interactions will become more common.

Counter AEW&C isn't actually that hard to do, just get a high-powered jammer to the point where it nearly has EMP capability, and point it at enemy AEW&C to fry its electronics. It's not exactly blowing the shit out of a plane, but it's sufficient to force the AEW&C back without doing a hard-kill and thus creating a diplomatic incident.
