I am afraid that you missed the fact that the two photos were taken from different angle that caused the "difference" of the front fuselage. This is easily seen because:

Comparison of 2018 and 2020 version of J-20 by East Pendulum.
One of the more subtle changes IMO is the shape of the lower front fuselage and lower intake. The lower front fuselage from the bottom of the radome to just below the intake looks wider and the transition from the 'cheek' portion (where side viewing radar is installed in Su-57) smoother in 2020 version. The 'cheek' portion also seems smaller.
From the angle, I think the lower intake portion is also reshaped.
Note: I know the 2020 version pic had been posted here before, but the side by side comparison makes it so much easier to spot the changes.

These two facts mean that the underside of the new photo will appear more visible therefor seems wider. l think there is no geometry change as you suggested.
- The right (looking from top side towards the nose) vertical stabilizer of the new J-20 is blocked by its fuselage while the old J-20 is not. This means that the J-20s were at different altitude when photos were taken.
- The new photo was taken when J-20 had a much higher AOA when landing than the old photo.

That may be the most likely reason as new engine is so big a change that need rectification.Ok ... three J-20s & three J-10Cs at the CFTE spotted at Xi'an-Yanliang. Could it be that these are WS-10 powered ones?
