For both Yang Wei and his country this was probably a blessing in disguise. If he had gotten into Tsinghua or Beida he might not have ended up working at CAC.Ouch. I really mean it; if it were me I would be depressed for months.

I'm sure he would have done just fine at either PKU or Tsinghua, and perhaps even would have made a lot more money, but there are very few life achievements that can top being a father of one of your country's most advanced aerospace projects.Blessing for the country, maybe, but a guy of his intelligence, effort, and attitude would've gone very far with a degree from PKU or Tsinghua. The reason why he is so distinguished at CAC is because of his own work, not CAC itself.
I've been wondering if he looks like a nerd, but LOL I don't know what's the Chinese stereotype of a nerd

One of the main reasons he is so distinguished isn't just because he himself has done work worthy of distinction, but because the organization he works for has accomplished things worthy of distinction (and indeed has been able to earn responsibilities that grant greater distinction because of those accomplishments). It's also very difficult to have as much success as Yang Wei has had at CAC without a matching degree of competence and capability in your organization and peers. While Yang Wei has obviously played a very large role in both his own personal successes and the successes CAC, it would be remiss to treat his success only as singular and independent. The man, as obviously capable as he is, did not lift up CAC by himself.
Meh... Nothing new there, but gave him a little too much credit. He is smart and actually very hard working. Meet him once when he took my uncle and family out for dinner. My uncle trained him back in the day when they worked on jf-17 together. There are a lot of chiefs in 611, almost like team leaders in other companies. Before retirement, my uncle is also a chief, for which area I will not disclose, so he won't get invited for tea. A lot of the best guys at 611 no one outside will know, they have high level guys (but not highest) like yang wei to be the spokesman.now noticed in Facebook (it's )
"China’s J-20 fighter jet chief designer becomes popular online celebrity
A new online celebrity has arisen in China. Yang Wei, the chief designer of the nation’s J-20 fighter jet, shot to fame after he revealed his time as a student who went to university at the age of 15 and got his master’s degree at 22.
“I got a perfect score for five of my junior high graduation exams and a score of 99 out of a 100 for another one, which exempted me from taking the college entrance exam two weeks later. I was 15,” Yang said in a TV program.
Yang said he took gaokao without much preparation, but fell short by a couple points to meet the admission requirement for Tsinghua or Peking—China’s top two universities. He was eventually admitted by Luo Shijun, China’s most renowned expert at Northwestern Polytechnical University, which is one of China’s best aviation and aerospace research institutes.
At the age of 22, when most people only got their bachelor’s degree, Yang had already obtained his master’s degree and started his aircraft design career at Chengdu Aircraft Design Institute, China’s top-notch aviation design and manufacturing body, where his work and China’s military aviation industry took off.
Over the years, Yang has worked as the chief designer of multiple fighter jets, including the J-20, a twinjet, fifth-generation stealth , reportedly the third in the world and the first in Asia, which officially entered military service in February. Yang is also the chief designer of the FC-1 fighter jet—a star combat aircraft in the world, which was jointly developed by China and .
Yang’s first-time revelation of his prodigy years has caught wide attention online, making him China’s latest online celebrity. Many netizens commented that they are greatly impressed by the smart, hardworking chief designer who is also the pride of China."
No, he's not a nerd, he's a cool Dude, and good for Chinese military fans that he ended up at Chengdu, but please, lets not forget Dr. Song,, people seem not to hold Dr. Song in the high esteem he deserves.. Dr. Song is China's "Kelly Johnson". Yang Wei had lots of help to get where he's at, and I'm very impressed....
