I am wondering whether they can act like airbrakes?

By they way deino, are there any photos of production or in service J-20 using airbrakes? I wonder whether they have eliminated them already. The TD 2001/2002 have barn-door sized airbrakes. Eliminating them (like in the Su-35) would save even more weight.

No, from number '2011' on they no longer had an airbrake.

We're aware the dorsal air brake was eliminated, but the question was whether or not the "ruddevator's" deflected together to act as airbrakes?? and I believe they do?? just as the F-22's rudders deflect together for aerodynamic braking, they are certainly plumbed into "pitching" the J-20 by the FCS, so even if you selected full aft stick on roll-out?? they would contribute to aerodynamic braking..

Full aft stick would also shift the center of gravity aft, putting additional aircraft weight on the main gear, increasing braking effectiveness.

Great question, we seem to have photographic evidence for possibly up to 20 airworthy aircraft??

In principle I agree with You: We now have seven confirmed aircraft assigned to the 176th Brigade (78271 to 78277) and one confirmed to the 172nd Brigade (78232) ... but given the assumption that these numbers start with no. 21 and given the fact that we have seen a GE-imag from Canzhou showing three J-20s together, I assume it is highly likely that no 78231 also exists and likely also 78233.

That would make 9 operational birds ... but we also know that in fact since February 2017 we've lost all reliable data on the current production status. From time to time there are new yellow coloured birds spotted, some with grey, some with brown structures or even completely in yellow on the intake.

At the age of 22, when most people only got their bachelor’s degree, Yang had already obtained his master’s degree and started his aircraft design career at Chengdu Aircraft Design Institute, China’s top-notch aviation design and manufacturing body, where his work and China’s military aviation industry took off.

Over the years, Yang has worked as the chief designer of multiple fighter jets, including the J-20, a twinjet, fifth-generation stealth

So much praising this one guy recently. Yang Wei is obviously a great credit to China and a real talent, along with all the others that brought China's aerospace industry to what it is today, but being second best isn't worthy of celebration. So many amazing aerodynamic designs that has come out of the US and Europe in the last century and none of the guys who designed them were publicly celebrated on this level. The only good I can see come out of all this is the potential inspiration it can give young people and the encouragement it can give the people working in these fields.

Ouch. I really mean it; if it were me I would be depressed for months.
