But then this would be a novum since even the LRIP J-10As had these unusual two-digit serials.

They probably already has assigned serials. It could be that this time around they chose not to print it or print it small on the aircraft to be seen only from a book reading distance.

Anyone care to make a guess as to where this was taken?

Definitely not CAC, and the rocky landscape and lack of obvious surrounding buildings suggests its somewhere central or west in the country...

Could be Daocheng Yading, but I also feel inclined and partial towards thinking it may be Dingxing?

Maybe someone could examine the terrain surrounding Daocheng and Dingxing and the gravelly one is probably the better candidate.
