Putting the photo here to better illustrate my point. The slot they cut actually helps the canard to integrate with the curve of the intake. I believe that the original canard on 2001 didn't take that into account, so there was a gap between the canard and the intake.

Well that's what I mean, sans gap, wouldn't the fit actually be better, because the part of the fuselage that faces the canard is straight? With a cut out of the canard, wouldn't it now fit worse?

To illustrate what I mean I drew on this old photo of 2002.

EDIT:

I upped the exposure on the first one to reveal more details:

What the heck, how come I don't see the new cut out in any of the other photos? :( . In that photo, 2011 canards look the same as the ones in 2002 photo.

STOP THE ATTACKS, INSINUATIONS, AND "TELLING OTHER MEMBERS WHAT ANOTHER MEMBER MEANS."

SamuraiBlue has explained himself. He has not violated any rules on this thread. If he does, he will be warned, etc.

His comments about the branches were over...and passing well down the thread until they were resurrected by attacking what he meant, and indicating that he believed all J-20 posts were all "fake," when he never said anything of the sort.

If you do not like his skepticism, ignore him. Or engage him on the merits alone in a reasoned manner.

Do not bring bias from other forums here.

We are all adults and can figure things out ourselves, allowing each member to make up his or her own mind.

If rules are violated, the Moderators on SD will take care of it.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>> END MODERATOR'S INTRUCTIONS <<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Thanks guys. Let's just get back to discussing the special events of this weekend with the 1st flight of 2011.

Maiden flight video. The best one thus far.

The "cut" is the elevated portion of the actuator structure on the y axis which when rotated blocks the otherwise straight edge that joins the fuselage. At least that's my take.

It looks like the 2011 intake surface (next to the canard) is no longer straight but has a curve now. So the canard must now have a curve also, for a better fit.

There are even more changes ... on the wing, maybe the weapons bay ...:confused:

Wrt the canard 'kink', I think people are getting confused because they are thinking of the canards as in effect a 2D object, when in fact it's a 3D one.

From the bottom, the kink can't be seen because its not a cut in the canard along the x-axis, but rather a curved lip along the y-axis.

If you look at the original picture showing the kink, the canards are deflected down at an extreme angle, and it reveals and flat 90 degree surface along the canard root which is needed to allow the canards free movement. But that's bad for stealth, so the canards have a little curved lip built into their root edge which blends seamlessly into the fuselage curvature to preserve the continuous curvature stealth outline of the J20 when the canards are at their normal deflection range.

When viewed from the front or side on, that lip would just look like part of the fuselage. It's only noticeable because of the extreme deflection and slight angle that the original picture was taken at.

Uhm, no one has mentioned this yet so I thought I might.

Seems to me that the large, serrated forward part of the main landing gear door is gone!

What's left is a small, squarish door, just covering the main wheels.

Removal of the forward door would allow for some additional space for the larger main weapons bay.

Just my 2 cents.

Which "forward part of the landing gear door" are you talking about? If you're talking about the door that opened downwards and hung there on the 2001, I'm pretty sure it's not gone. Without that door, the main landing gears can't physically get inside the aircraft.
