I think if it were software related it would be phrased differently, or it even won't be mentioned (how often is software mentioned in military project updates anyway? Usually it's in concert with some significant hardware change)

What you're saying sounds right. Maybe I'm trying to temper my expectations.

On that note, is it possible that the eventual aft section would be a little shorter? As others here have pointed out before, the join between the nozzle and the bottom aft is all sorts of awkward, especially for a stealth fighter. The rear tapers up in this nice shallow angle, when suddenly... Woah! Engine nozzle! When looked at from the side, the engines even jut out a little bit, peeking around from behind the ventral fins. It just looks sloppy, and doesn't match the careful shaping of the rest of the plane. That, and the huge actuators for the flaps and such both look really odd to me.

It's always amusing to see mentions of "Major modifications" be met with what's basically a wish list from the various forumites.

By weapons testing, are we saying live firings or inert drops?

And as the rigorous flight testing of YF-22 during the ATF program showed, you can still test fire weapons even before all the fine aspects of FCS and mission avionics.

While I think both are technically possible, the only reason the YF-22 fired a weapon in the ATF was to make a demonstration. I imagine that there'd be almost no point testing the weapons before all the other subsystems are nearing finalization since the weapons systems are dependent on all the other subsystems functioning well.

fancy nozzle or not, i want to see WS-15 on her

When you want to test and develop latest stealth fighterjet you do not want to risk a problem in an engine. So they take a very trusted en known engine to get the plane up and running as fast as possible. The engine is already being developed and tested but needs to be tested or improved to get a much better performance. That is not the only case by J20 but also in many other western programs. We should stop telling that China can not make this or that. I am not a chinese but I am proud that I am analyzing their performance since the J6 copies. I have seen and spoken many and I am not shocked to see their performances. They have an improvement path that is beyond anything anyone else showed. They have a lot of new things in the background. Just like the Pakistani. If needed the programs will be shown. If not... Then it does not mean they cannot or have not.

i appreciate your comment, and i was not meaning to bring up the point you aforementioned

i just want to see the girl in her best party dress, WS-15 that is

How about the possibility of a twin-seater?

now that would be a shocker

Nobody cares about the pitot tube. The pitot tube is not a permanent structure and does not count toward the length of the aircraft

Most Western and Russian sources do not know what they are talking about, consequently these sources are just opinions and have little basis in facts. This is especially true for Russian sources like the one you have used. People on this forum are experts in comparison.

In any case, the most recent satellite imagery shows the J-20 to be equal or slightly shorter than a J-15. Since we know J-15 is the same as Su-33 with

, we know J-20 cannot be longer than 21.19 meters. It is that simple. One thing is certain, and that is J-20 is clearly shorter than J-11/Su-27. This confirms a post I made this Janurary, in which I also estimated the J-20 to be 20m to 21m in length.

this image is the best measurement and most effective estimator in terms of accuracy. by using known measurements of aircraft such as j-11, j-10, then comparing this to the dimensions displayed in the photo, we can get a ratio of image:actual. using this ratio, we can do the math for the j-20 displayed in the photo. then you get your final answer
